About the Author
Dr. H. Royden Jones was Chair of the Department of Neurology at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Burlington, Massachusetts; Director of the Electromyography Laboratory at Boston Children’s Hospital; and Clinical Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Jones completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Neurology and a fellowship in neurological physiology at the Mayo Clinic. He served over 3 years in the United States Army as Chief of Neurology at 5th General Hospital, Bad Cannstatt, Germany. Dr. Jones was Board certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology, and neuromuscular medicine. Upon completion of his training he joined the Lahey Clinic in 1972. In 1977 he also joined the neurology department at Boston Children’s Hospital, founding the electromyography laboratory in 1979. Pediatric EMG became his major clinical research interest. Dr. Jones was co-editor of three major textbooks on childhood clinical neurophysiology and neuromuscular disorders. He was a co-founder of the biennial International Paediatric EMG Conference based at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London, England. Recognized as one of the top neurologists in the U.S., Dr. Jones was an author and editor of several Netter publications including two editions of Netter’s Neurology, The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations: Nervous System, Volume 7, Part I (Brain) and Part II (Spinal Cord and Peripheral Motor and Sensory Systems), 2nd Editions (volumes in the Netter Green Book Collection). Dr. Jones authored and edited several other Netter publications and contributed over 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Dr. Jones served 8 years as a director of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, becoming Chair of its Neurology Council in 2004. In 2007 he received the Distinguished Physician Award from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Lahey Clinic’s Medical Staff Association recognized Dr. Jones in 2010 with its highest honor-the Frank Lahey Award for “commitment to the values of Dr. Frank Lahey: respect, teamwork, excellence, commitment to personal best.” Dr. Jones was named Outstanding Teacher in Pediatric Neurology 2012 - 2013 by the Department of Neurology, Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also received an award in recognition of his many years of dedicated teaching at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Michael Aminoff was born and educated in England, graduating from University College London in 1962 and as a physician from University College Hospital Medical School in 1965. He subsequently trained in neurology and neurophysiology at The National Hospital (Queen Square) in London, and in 1974 moved to UCSF where he has been Professor of Neurology since 1982. He was Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratories at UCSF until 2004, when he became Executive Vice Chair of the department of neurology, and also directs the Parkinson’s Disease Clinic and Research Center, a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence.

He is the author of more than 230 published medical or scientific articles, as well as the author or editor of some 29 books. His published scientific contributions led to the award of a Doctorate in Science, an advanced doctorate in the Faculty of Science, by the University of London in 2000. He is the one of the two editors-in-chief of the four-volume Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (2nd Edition, Academic Press, 2014), and one of the series editors of the multi-volume Handbook of Clinical Neurology (Elsevier). He was Editor-in Chief of the journal Muscle & Nerve from 1998 to 2007 and serves on numerous other editorial boards. He was a director of the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology for 8 years, and chair of the board in 2011.

Dr. Aminoff has received numerous prizes including the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine in 2006 and the A.B. Baker Award of the American Academy of Neurology for life-time achievements and contributions to medical education in 2007. In 2010, he was awarded the title of “Distinguished Professor” at the University of California, San Francisco.

He is married and has three children, one a pediatric rheumatologist, another a federal defense attorney, and the third an assistant district attorney.

This is a MUST HAVE for any music graduate student who wants a job!

As as one of the book's last proof readers, I believe I am qualified to review the book and I am honored to provide the first review of it here on Amazon. I didn't have to buy it as I have all the proofs on my computer, but in support of Dr. Hamann's great work and teaching, it is a pleasure to own the final product.

As my review title says, if you are a graduate student in music, you absolutely MUST purchase and read this book. It will make or save your career! Or both. That is not an exaggeration! Dr. Hamann's has years of experience sitting on search and interview committees and he imparts practical--emphasis on *practical*--information that will give YOU the edge that will land you that job and help you to keep it.

I took a course at the University of Arizona from Dr. Hamann that was a prep class for music graduate students. This course versed us in writing CVs, Teaching Philosophies, and cover letters and put us into a live interview and do an instructional demonstration. The course also covered all the minutiae that you wouldn't even think about but that you had better be aware of. It was an elective. I think it should be a required class, it was that good. One of the best courses I've ever taken for any degree at any university, as a matter of fact. This book covers everything that we did in the class.

Let me return to my emphasis on this book being filled with practical information. I am talking about real life stuff that you need to know. Great Professional Resource

So many good points and examples for ways of going about obtaining the first college position. There are many things that seem like common sense, but still offer some refresher material when approaching the interview. I have primarily put into effect the pre interview material such as CV writing, and have found this book a useful resource in doing so.

Time on my side

In this slim book Adrian Bardon discusses one of the largest, possibly *the* largest metaphysical issue: time. Surprisingly enough, his conclusions do not suggest that the riddle of time is unsolvable. On the contrary, the intricate questions presented in the Introduction - "What is the nature of our experience of time? What gives time its direction? Is travel in time possible? Is the future unwritten, and do our choices matter? Did time begin, and, if so, how?" (p. 2) - get directly addressed and rather unambigously answered in the subsequent chapters. If you wish to believe that the "flow" of time constitutes a conceptual enigma that is impossible to penetrate with our feeble human minds, "A Brief History of the Philosophy of Time" will disappoint you.

The title is somewhat misleading. Bardon does not limit himself to the philosophical method as it is traditionally understood. His approach is eclectic and energetic: The author combines metaphysical reasoning with results from physics and cognitive science. That applaudable strategy allows the author to cover a lot of ground in only 180 pages. A more suitable title would be thus "A Brief History of the Concept of Time" ("A Brief History of Time" is already taken).

Bardon's story starts in the usual place: in Ancient Greece, with the Eleatic paradoxes of motion and change, and Aristotle's answers to Parmenides and Zeno. Augustine is mentioned in the passing, and then we jump straight to the modern period with Locke's and Kant's epistemological proposals concerning the origin of our temporal concepts. We reach the twentieth century already in the third chapter. The rest of the book is dedicated to Einstein's theories of relativity, McTaggart's notorious arguments against the reality of the time flow, the arrows of time, the possibility of time travel, the question whether free will and a fixed future are compatible, and the possible beginning (and end) of the Universe.

There is no doubt that Bardon has picked up many exciting bits. However, it is hard to believe that medieval philosophy has nothing interesting to tell us about the nature of time, especially given the theological predilections of the Scholastics. The continental strand of philosophy is also entirely absent. I miss in particular Henri Bergson whose views on duration I remember to be very inspiring (and very complex). I do not blame Bardon for having his way of presenting the subject, but I do not appreciate when an author makes huge omissions without informing his reader explicitly about them. A couple of paragraphs in the Introduction and some footnote references would do; otherwise some readers may be led to think that Bardon's book includes all significant contributions to the debate on the nature of time. It certainly does not.

"A Brief History of the Philosophy of Time" is mainly a story about two mutually incompatible views of time: the dynamic one that conforms to our intuitions according to which time flows and the present moment travels from the past towards the future, and the static one that conceives time as the fourth dimension of the spatiotemporal "block" of reality. The book gives us a good understanding of the latter, but we also ascertain that a coherent explication is a very tricky task, since one has to interpret the flow of time as an illusion *without* using the question-begging temporal concepts. So, when we read sentences like this one - "The absence of any absolute now is perfectly consistent with my having beliefs, at any moment, as to what is 'currently' happening, and as to what lies in the past or future" (p. 108) - we grasp, of course, Bardon's point, but we also see that he does not manage to fully control the semantic subtleties. Because what do "moment", "past" and "future" mean within the static view? Maybe the time-as-an-extra-spatial-dimension metaphor should be employed more vividly and more shrewdly.

Bardon's sympathizes with the static view, and presents many good arguments for it. He is, however, uncharitable in his assessment because he does not tell us about competing arguments corroborating the dynamical view. Also, the author never seriously disputes the static hypothesis. He mentions several apparently powerful counter-arguments - the phenomenon of change (p. 98-99), our ordinary understanding of causation (p. 99), scientific explanation (p. 100) and time-travel asymmetry (p. 136) - but he dismisses them quickly, usually as psychological biases. Although Bardon tries to construe "temporal passage as adaptive psychological projection", I did not gather how his theory is different from Kant's idealism. Ironically enough, the author manages to present Kant's views on time more lucidly than his own.

Finally, there is the matter of style. Some sections are excellently written. I enjoyed in particular Bardon's exposition of Kantian epistemology in Chapter 2. The difference between (metaphysical) fatalism and (causal) determinism is carefully expounded in Chapter 6. However, in many places Bardon gets slightly verbose: He explains something, and then he explains it again using another words, but too often these additional paragraphs do not really increase our understanding. So, yes, this short book could be even shorter. Besides, many sentences are awkward and cluttered with genitives: "Metaphysical fatalism's embrace of the principle of bivalence derives from the static theory's metaphysical position on the status of events in time" (p. 142).

Bardon's approach to the subject is an exemplary synthesis of popular metaphysics and popular science. That approach alone easily trumps drawbacks of the book, but hardly removes them. If you have enough time to read only one *short* book on (the philosophy of) time, Bardon's work is probably the best choice. But if you simply wish to read a *single* book on the subject, I believe there are better alternatives.

nice, accessible book - but suffers from the same basic problem that bedevils books on Time - define your terms!

A fundamental flaw of this, and other, books on time is this - if time has no causal impact, then what is the agreed starting point for any explanation of it? If time is just a word (i.e. it has no real outcomes, no empirical evidence, to anchor our definitions around) then its meaning is based on our collective usage only (what else?); but no one ever seems to bother looking in the dictionary when writing about time - including in this otherwise interesting book.

If you do, and you break down the many varied uses of the word time you can separate them all into two distinct core meanings:-
1. Time is an abstract referencing framework for calibrating and indexing events (and intervals i.e. change), and
2. Time is also a non-specific collective term (mass noun) which refers to events (i.e. a non-specific collection of events).
So events determine time (events are the underlying fundamental). And that makes time explainable outside of itself – one of these two definitions will always hold – it is very powerful.

And as interval [or period, duration] and persistence can be explained by reference to events (and not to time) that makes time a redundant word.

Too many assertions are made about time by supposedly eminent academics, whilst apparently still in search of its meaning. How does that work? How can they make an assertion about something they’ve either not yet fully defined, or empirically evidenced?

Dravecky's tone is straightforward, even matter-of-fact; but the message of his courage and religious faith comes through clearly. This is first a baseball book: details of his career are provided; the description of the comeback victory over the Reds is particularly effective. The other story here is one of a battle with cancer. It will be excellent reading for others battling the disease. Dravecky finds much of his strength in his religious beliefs, and the work is also a testimonial to that faith (Zondervan publishes a number of Christian titles). Another Homerun for the king of Tracks and Mysteries

I checked this book from our school library. I must addmit I was a little apprehensive at first, but by the third chapter I was hooked. His name is Peter Darwin, no relation to Charles, he is an english diplomat. He is staying in his childhood town while caring for some new friends. Peter soon finds himself wrapped up in the troulbes of his new friend's future son-in-law. The son-in-law is having troulbes in his horse vet practice when horse after horse in his care ends up dead. Then, the vet hospital burns to the ground and a dead body is found. Peter has to find out who is trying to set up his new-found friend by using the knowledge from his friend and long lost childhood memories. I can assure you, you will not want to put this book down (I sure didn't)

Good, but not his best

In Comeback, Francis enters the world of diplomacy and veterinary medicine more than horse racing, although horses play an important part as usual. The plot seems more contrived than usual in this outing, however. The story opens when Peter Darwin, after meeting two British performers in Miami, find himself helping the couple after they are mugged on the street. Having taken responsible for them in a small way, he finds himself escorting them to England where they are to attend the woman's daughter's wedding.
Once in England, things really go to pieces. The daughter and her fiance work in a veterinary hospital, he as a well-respected surgeon, she as a nurse. But his career is in jeopardy as one after another horse dies after he has operated on it. And the cause has proved impossible to determine.
On a visit to the races at Cheltenham, Peter just happens to meet a young woman employed by the Jockey Club who is escorting two Japanese gentlemen, neither of whom speaks English. Well, Peter's last posting just happened to be Japan where he learned the language and he had even met one of the gentlemen while posted there. The romance which follows is contrived and adds nothing to the basic story in itself. Annabel, the young woman Peter has eyes for, does have connections that help him in his investigation, but those meetings could have come about in a more believable fashion.
Still, Francis' knowledge of horses, racing, and the information he garners regarding other professions is always enlightening. Weak as it is, Comeback is still a fast and often fun read.

The Comeback Kid

In the face of adversity, faith in God will see you through. That's the moral of the story.

Dave Dravecky was a baseball player. A pitcher. That was all he ever wanted to be. And he was good at it. Good enough to pitch in the major leagues. But when a cancerous tumor was found in his pitching arm it looked like his career was over.

Or was it? The Dravecky family had faith in God. They placed their future and Dave's career in His hands. Placing faith in God is always the right thing to do and Dravecky's story is a testimony to that fact. Against all odds, against all expectations, Dave Dravecky overcame the loss of his deltoid muscle and worked his way through the minor leagues back up to the major leagues.

Comeback is a story of triumph over impossible odds. Ronald Reagan said of Dravecky, "The remarkable faith and courage he has shown is an inspiration to us all." So it is. This book caprured myattention from the beginning to the end. The interaction between Aurora & Brigham & there love for one another jusrt set my heart a flutter. When Brigham went to rescue her from her slimy Uncle& felt bad because he felt he let her down from protecting her as promised & the struggle he went thru after was heartbreaking. Had it not been for Aurora & her knowing how to bring him out of his funk he never would have recovered. He also was so gentle with her know ing that she was a virgin on yhere wedding night. He may have been a warrior but he was a puppy dog where his love for Aurora was concerned. I'll read it again after I read some othera. It would be nice to see then have children & what pursuits there children might get into. Bravo Coreene:)

I pride myself on always finishing a book. In my LIFE I have only not finished two books. This is going to be the third.

*spoilers may follow*

So we start with our heroine with her stereotypical two dimensional Marquis de Sade style uncle. She's his victim so she runs away. This is not bad. Then we meet our bitter, once-bitten-twice-shy hero. Also not bad.

Then the suck starts. The book is ridiculously overwritten. Without exaggerating, there are PARAGRAPHS between one footstep and the next. An entire chapter goes by between the start of the aisle and the end of it. I have skipped pages and chapters with no effect - because nothing is happening. All the characters do is stand around and think. Instead of being privy to dialogue between characters that might enhance the plot (assuming there is a plot, I don't see one), we get to read about what the character thinks about what is being said.

The heroine is whiny and a victim. Her initial act of running away was the only gumption she has, because the rest of the time she cries, and is afraid, and cries, and withholds sex because she is angry. She needs to be rescued after doing stupid things and has no control over her apparently raging hormones. She is a passive aggressive child marketed as a strong female lead. She is constantly calling the hero a brute, yet I have yet to see one brutish act by him. Once again in a medieval romance, we are told about this horrible, awful man who turns out to be an overly indulgent nice guy. He, too, has no control over his sex drive and falls madly in love with a woman who assaulted him and stole his horse. Within days. Really? What happened to the sour, bitter, "I don't ever want to get married again" man that I was introduced to in the second chapter?

So anyone who has read any of my other reviews knows how much I hate anachronisms. This book is full of them.

1. Stuck reading stilted olde timey language 'twas and 'twill and 'tis. Yet some characters speak with a cockney accent. Really? And modern colloquialisms such as "track record" (can't have a track record without horse racing - not a sport yet), and "he was screwed", among many others. And I'm pretty sure even Mel Brooks wouldn't use " 'twouldn't ".

2. Clydesdales weren't around until the 1800s.

3. Velvet was reserved for the ultra-wealthy, read "royal family". Her husband is a Baron, which is high up but not as high as a Duke, and she's Lady of... which isn't really a rank at all. Certainly not of the rank to be having velvet pillows, and velvet curtains, and velvet for every dress she wears.

4. Even if her token gay friend is gay, he's not going to be her lady's maid. Gender roles, gender roles, gender roles. They may not exist now, but they sure as **** existed in this period of time

5. Rugs were extremely expensive and were not placed on the floor, they were generally used to cover tables. Rushes were put on the floor.

6. Sex hasn't always been an extra super-taboo subject. The attitude in this book towards sex reflects more of the regency period than the medieval, and I'm sorry, but it wouldn't matter if the Pope himself walked in on the hero and heroine getting nasty, there is not going to be a shotgun (or crossbow) wedding mandated by the church. It was so, so very common for men to take mistresses and people to have relations outside of marriage.

7. Horse people will get this, and I am a horse person. When a 1500+ pound animal is freaking out, talking quietly to it and patting it on the nose isn't going to accomplish anything. SO many examples of this BS in this novel.

So I mentioned the token gay friend. He's a token gay friend. Completely gratuitous and serves zero purpose in the book other than to cause stereotypical "I'm gay and hitting on people who aren't gay who then beat me up" conflict. I am not super familiar with the subject in this time period, but I have reason to doubt that this was less of an issue then than it is today.

So I had to give this at least one star, and I suppose negative stars would be too harsh. Despite the almost complete lack of typographical mistakes, this book is just unreadable. According to the progress meter on my Kindle, I have skipped 10% of the book (right around the middle) and haven't missed anything. I skip page after page, and sometimes entire chapters, of nothing but the hero or heroine thinking, usually about their counterpart. The novel starts out with plot, which then fizzles into nothing. If I managed to get to the end, I am assuming that the two-dimensional villain is going to make a last minute appearance and the hero is going to save the whining, sobbing, helpless heroine and they will then live happily ever after.

While studying at Humboldt State University in the early 70’s, Michael Phillips and his wife, Judy, established the One Way Bookshop—a small Christian bookstore catering mainly to other students. Now the bookstore is an important part of the Christian community in Humboldt County, and Phillips is one of the country’s most respected and prolific Christian authors.

Phillips’ long publication history includes over twenty non-fiction books, including biographies of Victorian author George MacDonald and Olympic athlete-turned-Congressman Jim Ryun. But he’s best known for his fiction—and is considered one of the major founders of the Christian fiction genre. In the past two decades, Phillips has written more than sixty fiction titles, many of which have been best-sellers. Matthew finally finds the beautiful Sabina and presents her with a rose, a symbol of their deep and undying love.

Now Matthew, Sabina, and the baron must escape to West Germany before Gustav discovers their location. The borders are watched with hateful eyes, and the Berlin wall appears impenetrable. Only by relying on their strong faith in God will they find the courage to attempt an escape to freedom.

About the Author
In 1970, while students at Humboldt State University, Mike and Judy Phillips began what would become the One Way BookShop as a small, informal source of Christian books and materials for their fellow students. Over the next two decades God prospered those small beginnings, and now the bookstore is a thriving part of the Humboldt County Christian community.

Family is very important to Mike. He and his wife, Judy, have taught their three sons, Patrick, Robin and Gregory, at home throughout their education. Home schooling enables the family to frequently accompany Mike in his work-related travels.

Reunion, heriorism, escape

The Wall came up. It separated East Berlin from West Berlin and with it--Sabrina and Matthew. Follow the Baron, Sabrina, and Matthew as they are reunited. They never forgot how much they loved each other and how grateful to God they were for perserving that love during the years of their separation. Follow their heroic escape to freedom in the West. Their lives become entertwined with the selfless other in the Network. This is a story of courage and God's perfect timing

A Thrilling Closure to the Series

This is the third and final book in an exciting series of desire, love, intrique, deception, bravery and true loyalty. The three books that make up the Secret of the Rose series should be read in sequence or the reader will miss too much of the drama. This book culminates in an escape from Eastern Germany to West Berlin by an American diplomat (with no imunity), who had secretly gone east to find and bring back the love of his life and her father who had been imprisoned by the German Stasi for 14 years. They finally made the escape along with the help of the then still existing underground in Poland and Germany. Threaded throughout the series you were tantalized with wanting to know what the secret of the rose is.

I had visited both East and West Berlin during the Cold War years and can confirm the accuracy of the picture of despair the author paints in this novel and the immense pressure to conform with all the rules for living in fear of being reported to the police. The series is historically accurate, so if you want to learn a little more about living both free and then under Communism, this is a very interesting way to do that.

All I can really say is to read all three books and you won't be dissapointed.

Love this book series.

I have loved every one of Michael Phillips books. Especially since I have not read one with sexual content. I avoid books like that and I am insulted when I read a book that looks like something and the author throws in a gratuitous sex scene that has nothing to do with the story or is unnecessary. I haven't had to worry about that with Michael Phillips' books. The story is compelling and interesting. This book is a continuation of the story in Secret of the Rose Book 2 but it will stand alone...but make you want to start with #1.
