Thinking about a music technology career? This book is essential!

I just finished reading "Beyond Sound", and it was fantastic! It's like he read my mind about all the questions I had about music technology and then wrote a book about it! I really like the Appendix A at the end, as it has been so hard for me to try finding and researching colleges with degrees in both music technology and music business, and now its right at my fingertips. I think I'm going to be re-reading this one several times! I loved the book and it was very informative.

Good source for hard to find information

Good book for anyone who thinks they may want to pursue a career in music technology. This book breaks down the different degree typse, all the schools that offer relevant programs and even audition advice. In audition, the book really provides a service by explaining many of the related jobs, their career fields, where they might be found and how to pursue them. This volume is a great resource to have on your shelf.

Bought this for my 11th grader who is interested in studying music technology in college. Very informative re. what music tech is, the colleges that have programs in music tech, and the diversity of these programs. Helped is narrow the college search!

Half of Indonesia’s massive population still lives on farms, and for these tens of millions of people the revolutionary promise of land reform remains largely unfulfilled. The Basic Agrarian Law, enacted in the wake of the Indonesian Revolution, was supposed to provide access to land and equitable returns for peasant farmers. But fifty years later, the law’s objectives of social justice have not been achieved.

Land for the People provides a comprehensive look at land conflict and agrarian reform throughout Indonesia’s recent history, from the roots of land conflicts in the prerevolutionary period, and the Sukarno and Suharto regimes, to the present day, in which democratization is creating new contexts for peoples’ claims to the land. Drawing on studies from across Indonesia’s diverse landscape, the contributors examine some of the most significant issues and events affecting land rights, including shifts in policy from the early postrevolutionary period to the New Order; the Land Administration Project that formed the core of land policy during the late New Order period; a long-running and representative dispute over a golf course in West Java that pitted numerous indigenous farmers in Kalimantan against the urban elite; Suharto’s notorious “million hectare” project that resulted in loss of access to land and resources for numerous farmers; and the struggle by Bandung’s urban poor to be treated equitably in the context of commercial land development. Together, these essays provide a critical resource for understanding one of Indonesia’s most pressing and most influential issues.

One of My New Fave Cozy Series!

As Fire Chief Stella Griffin continues her investigation into the mysterious death of the previous fire chief, Eric Gamlyn – who happens to be haunting her cabin, she gets a few unexpected visitors. Her parents arrive in Sweet Pepper, along with Stella’s ex-boyfriend. The plan is to convince Stella to leave her temporary fire chief job and return to Chicago where she has a job, friends and family waiting. Stella, however, isn’t ready to make a decision. She loves Sweet Pepper and has grown close to her very own ghost, Eric. She doesn’t want to leave, but she’s not ready to turn her back on her old life either.

When Deputy Chum makes a shocking confession to Stella, on his way out of town to his own retirement, she starts getting closer to the truth. Then, tragedy strikes. Chum is murdered leaving even more questions unanswered, not to mention some of the most influential people in town scrambling to cover their tracks – including Stella’s wealthy grandfather.

The author does an excellent job of showing us the camaraderie between the members of the fire brigade as they all get closer with each book and becoming a family of their own. The dialogue throughout the book is snappy, witty and laced with humor especially between Stella and Eric. There is a ton of chemistry between these two, even though one of them is a ghost. It doesn’t matter, the sparks fly between them.

This series has become one of my top favorite cozy series. Stella is one of the best heroines to come around in a long time. I fell in love with her in both the first book in the series and in the following novella. I love her even more after this book.

It was edge-of-the-seat reading for me as I tried to figure things out along with Stella. I read through this book quickly and I just can’t get enough of it. I want more and I want more right now! I was so sad to finish this book and now have to wait for the next one to be released. Hopefully it won’t be too long a wait.

Great New Series

I hesitated to purchase the first book in the series because it didn't sound like a book that would interest me. I am now hopelessly hooked. This second book is great! Having read other books by these authors, I like the way they write. I would recommend this to anyone who likes good, interesting writing with just enough action and a little romance. The main character is very human and very likeable. And I love the cabin, AND its original occupant. You do have to like ghosts. I do not like cliffhanger endings, though. Now I have to wait to see what happened in the next book.

Firefighting Mystery

I enjoyed this book. This is the second in the series. Stella Griffin has a firefighting job in Tennessee and her family wants her to go home (Chicago, I think). She shares her cabin with a ghost, Eric, who bakes a lot! That's the cute and cozy element. Stella looks into Eric's death to find out who murdered him, although some people believe that he died while firefighting and that it wasn't murder. Another murder also occurs and there's a guy who wants to tear down Stella's cabin. You'll meet Stella's team of firefighters in this book and they do go out on calls. There's a Dalmatian named Hero in the book, also featured on the cover. Berkley Prime Crime mysteries always have great covers.

The authors also write as Joyce and Jim Lavene and have written many books and series.

In his focus on the transition from an authoritarian to a democratic regime, Rizman analyzes social processes and political issues in the context of the Third Wave of democratization, identifying “zones of certainty and uncertainty.”

Challenging many generally accepted ideas about small states and their transitions to democracy, this book places Slovenia’s pattern of democratization in the wider regional context of eastern and central European post-communist transitions. Rizman shows, for example, that a country’s size is merely one factor out of many, and while Slovenes considered the influence of larger states, their choices were not particularly circumscribed by them.

Opening with a discussion of the relevant theoretical environment in sociology and political science, Rizman illuminates the complex processes of democratic transition and consolidation. From there, the book analyzes the internal and external processes and factors relevant for Slovenia’s successful trajectory from existence as an ethnically defined sub-nation to an internationally recognized nation-state.
After careful consideration of religious, political, military, intellectual, and other socio-political stakeholders in the region, including the somewhat disturbing evidence of the salience of a new “radical Right”, Rizman concludes that Slovenia is irreversibly set on the course of democratization, with indications of having reached the early stages of consolidation.

Using the 1993 and 2001 NRC guidelines reports, the NAC—consisting of members from EPA, the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Transportation (DOT), other federal and state governments, the chemical industry, academia, and other organizations from the private sector—has developed AEGLs for more than 270 EHSs. In 1998, EPA and DOD requested that the NRC independently review the AEGLs developed by NAC. In response to that request, the NRC organized within its Committee on Toxicology (COT) the Committee on Acute Exposure Guideline Levels, which prepared this report. This report is the fourteenth volume in that series. Acute Exposure Guideline Levels for Selected Airborne Chemicals: Volume 14 summarizes the committee's conclusions and recommendations.

I think I am in love with this cookbook. I actually want to write a letter to Rick Stein and tell him that he has finally nailed down true authentic home cooked meals with this book. Everyone mildly interested in Indian Cuisine should own this book in their repertoire.
if you are looking for heavy milk based dishes, they are not in here, instead you will find great seafood, meat and poultry dishes that are quite easy to make as long as you have the ingredients AND the photography and anecdotes he shares are great too.

The Book is on the Money

My wife and I have travelled extensively and regularly to India over the past 50 years. Rick Stein has a TV program in the UK which portrays south India splendidly, especially the cuisine and his interactions with the cooks and chefs. My wife's brother and wife had the book on a recent visit to Durham. What we bought through Amazon was precisely what we wanted. The recipes are authentic and delicious.

Wide coverage of regional cuisines.

This book breaks down the prevalent myth propagated by most Indian restaurants in the US - that Indian food is either North Indian or South Indian vegetarian. Otherwise, completely homogenized. In reality, Indian food is a collection of several (over 20) regional cuisines and curry is not a spice that is bought in a jar (for Gods sake!). This book boldly attempts to reinforce this. But even this book is limited by how extensive it can be. After all it is just abook not an encyclopedia. Would love to see the actual TV Series even on DVD.

This is a great introduction to algorithms and computations in Statistical Mechanics

This is a great introduction to algorithms and computations in Statistical Mechanics. The book does not assume a lot of prior knowledge of Physics/Statistical Mechanics which is a great plus. This book is rare because it takes a very strong computational approach towards Physics (unlike most Physics textbooks that approach the subject with a very analytical approach with "nice" functions). The computational approach is really the approach you need to take when doing "real" Physics, in my opinion.

I also find that the book has a rare and sparse elegance too it: Its not needlessly verbose and the author explains his subject without drowning you in words. The approach is not to drown you in equations (either) but teach you just enough so that you understand the Computer Algorithm (which is the primary focus). There are a lot of interesting graphs and diagrams across the book too.

The algorithms explained in this book like the Metropolis algorithm, Simulated Annealing, Random Walks etc. have widespread application in areas outside Physics too. So I would recommend this book to people who find these algorithms abstract to take a look to get a good feel on how these algorithms work in a concrete setting. In other words, even if you are not a physicist, understanding how these algorithms work in physical systems will help in other areas like Machine Learning!

I am almost at the end of a MOOC on Statistical Mechanics taught by the author of this book. The MOOC is amazing (like the book). Ideally it would be amazing to read this book in conjunction with the course but this may not be possible for everyone, of course.

If I would offer a suggestion it would be the author should choose a particular computer language for the algorithms in this book in a future edition. Currently they are in psuedocode. Of course, this way these algorithms are more generic and can be implemented by interested readers in any language. But by implementing them in a particular language they become more "alive". In the MOOC course I'm taking, these algorithms are implemented in Python and there is a sort of instantaneous and interesting quality to them. You can run them, you can play around with them. This is not the case with the psuedocode in the book, sadly.

I wanted to learn some Stat. Mech., so I audited the MOOC taught by this author. The details in the book helped with the MOOC's homework. The two combined did the trick: I learned enough about Stat. Mech. to be satisfied.

This book is an excellent introduction suitable for senior level undergraduates and graduates in physics interested in statistical mechanics and MCMC simulations. The survey of Hard Disks, Bosons, and Ising Lattices showcases the emergence of entropic forces in random systems and takes readers through the mathematics and history of both computational simulation, and the physics the simulations try to solve. While the book does require some understanding of quantum mechanics through the 3rd and 4th chapters, the footnotes and well-maintained appendices at the end of each chapter keeps readers focused on a "need-to-know" track, while giving options for readers who need supplementary information.
