Michael Youssef received theological degrees from Moore College in Australia, Fuller Theological Seminary in California, and a PhD in social anthropology from Emory University. He traveled around the world on behalf of the Haggai Institute, speaking to thousands of leaders. In 1987 he founded The Church of the Apostles in Atlanta, Georgia, which served as a platform for Leading the Way’s international television and radio ministry, where Dr. Youssef is heard daily by millions at home and in over 190 countries.

Histories: on the one hand, Red – be it a pub or bloody Rose. On the other hand, White – be it the alabaster tombs of broken Princes or the quill of a playwright from Stratford-upon- Avon.’

Delightful perspective on Shakespeare's histories

I read this while watching The Hollow Crown on PBS' Great Performances this fall. Although not a companion, Asbury's book brought real-life insights to the narrative and Shakespeare's text. Viewing history through the lens of a theater artist led to evocative tales of people and place. A marvelous and well-written book; highly recommended!

Awesome story+art, lame binding.

Content-wise this entire book is a real treat. The art is a mix of golden era with modern smoothing and for me it's a fun way of adding to the Year One saga. The binding however has been a terrible issue for me. Towards the 5th issue of the Batgirl story single pages began to fall off the book. I'll now have to fix a total of about 16 pages. But hopefully you won't have to deal with that.

An excellent addition to any BatFan's library.

This was pretty much a two-for-one book.

The art isn't my normal comic book style. But, I'd heard good things so I went ahead and gave it a shot. All in all, not bad. My biggest complaint was it felt like it was written for a much younger audience than most books.

Not bad, but not impressive either.

Fans rejoice! Batgirl Year One is back in Print

If you enjoy Batman comics, then you must have heard about "Robin: Year One" and "Batgirl: Year One." The annoying part was, for the longest time, Batgirl Year One was out of print. Some people were selling a single issue of this 9-issue series for close to $40. This madness is finally at an end now that Batgirl Year One is available in this collection.

If you're a fan of Batman, you know one essential story is "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller, and by extension "Batman: The Long Halloween" and "Batman: Dark Victory" by Jeph Loeb and TIm Sale.

While not explicitly a continuation of the work done by Loeb/Sale, Robin joins Batman at the end of Dark Victory, so "Robin: Year One" details what Robin, Dick Grayson, experienced in his first adventures with the Dark Knight. "Batgirl: Year One" takes place after Robin's first year.

One thing to consider, though, is the shift in tone compared to the previously mentioned Batman stories. "Batman: Year One" is a realistic, down to earth approach to Batman. "The Long Halloween" is like a mobster movie. Batgirl/Robin Year One could be compared to extra long episodes from Batman the Animated Series. Overall, there are some Batman Villains who are "silly," but there are also villains who are deadly serious, and you're going to see both in this collection.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, except to say Chuck Dixon, our writer, manages to modernize both characters, while staying true to their roots. The art is fantastic, especially for Batgirl: Year One - lots of clean lines and good color. The art could sell the book by itself.

If you collect Batman comics, this is definitely one to add to your collection. Even if you own "Robin: Year One" already, it's worth re-buying just for "Batgirl: Year One." Make sure you get it before it's gone.

Too many fairy princes

In this fantasy tale of two cultures, a struggling young artist in London meets an eleven prince. In the cavern where an ensorcelled husk holds the remnants of the old king, this being sets his four sons to compete for his throne. The youngest is traditionally the winner; one of the princes arranges for the youngest brother to die. Clearly the gloves are off and the remaining brothers can trust nobody. Prince Kjartan is horrified by the death, and next has to battle off a party of wraiths... he magically travels to the world of men, which is full of painful iron.

Young Joel is cycling around London trying to find the resources to pay off a loan and save his job. The art gallery owner was hit by a car and is in hospital, so it's up to him as the sole employee. Joel got taken for a ride once before, when a boyfriend skipped the country with his savings. He's first got to defend himself against the loan shark's enforcers, then stumbles across an elf lying unconscious in rubbish bins. Kjartan is injured, and when he comes around, insists Joel be his servant. Can this day get any more bizarre?

This has to be one of the most unusual stories I've read in some time, with the unpleasantness of the elf kingdom contrasted with the plain honesty and artistry of Joel, and street violence topped by a visit to Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty proves a most excellent heroine, and a welcome guest in the tale.
If you've wondered how it would feel to battle a swarm of goblins, or to fall in love with a proud elfish prince, give this a try. It's funny and reckless, and it's always entertaining. It's for Roald Dahl fans who have grown up. While there's a gay romance, the alternate sexuality content is a small part of the story and I consider it could be read by teenagers.

Heartfelt and beautifully written - not the farce the title suggests.

The title of Alex Beecroft's book, "Too Many Fairy Princes," doesn't really quite do it justice.

It is too elegant, too delicately wrought, its emotions too genuinely felt, to be classed as a farce, which is what I think the title suggests. Maybe the author, who is a really wonderful writer, thought it would help sell it.

To be truthful, there is farce here, but it is more like a surreal comedy of manners, because the worlds of Kjartan and Joel are so different, their worldviews so completely alien to each other (at first), that it cannot help but make you laugh. But what struck me in reading this book was the wonderful sense of observation - the careful way the author makes us feel we are seeing something actually happen - the strangeness of Joe's discovery of a clearly magical creature right out of Tolkien collapsed behind his trash bins. The strangeness that Kjarten feels while experiencing reactions to this bumbling, awkward human that shouldn't even exist according to his training and his station.

Beecroft offers some of the most beautifully crafted narrative in the m/m genre, bringing in the paranormal/magical aspects of the tale as if she was an anthropologist studying an isolated tribe (which, of course, she is). And she doesn't make everything neat and tidy - we get the world of elves as it is, a mixture opulence and hatefulness. She lets us see Joel through Kjartan's eyes, and vice versa, and lets us feel what they feel with a gentle touch that traps us in the ultimate, crystalline truth of this fairy tale - that love is transformative, powerful, destructive, and potentially redemptive.

And, beyond all belief, HM Queen Elizabeth II appears, and it totally makes sense. Read it, you'll see.

From those earlier books I did know to expect good craft, which I really value

This is the first Beecroft I read beyond her Age of Sail books and I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of plot, action and characters. From those earlier books I did know to expect good craft, which I really value, as so much genre fiction, even with interesting plots and characters, is badly written. Beecroft didn't disappoint. It's an intriguing fantasy story of multidimensional travel. It has an unusual first chapter in how one of the lead characters is presented and what his world is like. There are fairly standard (but well rendered) elements of someone from another dimension having to adjust to a new one, but there are also some unexpected twists that raise the story much above the usual.

This book focuses on issues of governance and the nature and complexities of social transformation in India’s Northeast -- a ‘problem’ zone for policymakers -- particularly since the early 1990s. While governance is the thread that runs through the volume, the latter at one level addresses the challenges of governing in global times a region historically marked by acute violence, interethnic conflict and insurgency; and at another, traces macro changes in the very forms and technologies of governance. The essays in this volume point to how changing forms and technologies of governing insurgency, development and culture do not remain mere instruments of peace, but define the very nature and content of both peace and conflict and their interrelationship in the region.

For the first time in the history of scholarship on the region, the three crucial issues of insurgency, development and culture have been analysed through the lens of governance. This volume, therefore, marks an important addition to the scholarship on the region.

About the Author

Professor Samir Kumar Das is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of North Bengal, India. A professor of political science at the University of Calcutta, Kolkata (on leave), he has been the coordinator of the University Grants Commission-Departmental Research Support Programme on ‘Democratic Governance: Comparative Perspectives’. He was also a post-doctoral fellow (2005) of the Social Science Research Council (South Asia Program). He specializes in and writes on ethnicity, security, migration, rights, justice and democracy and has lectured widely in premier academic institutions at home and in the USA, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and many other countries on various assignments.
