About the Author

Graham MacKay is a consultant colorectal surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with an interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He qualified from Glasgow University where he also undertook a postgraduate MD degree in the field of perioperative care. During his training he carried out an Ethicon laparoscopic fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery as well as spending time at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He has a keen interest in academic surgery and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Glasgow University. He is also the Director of Surgical Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Patrick O'Dwyer qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1979. He subsequently worked at Cork University Hospital before travelling to Columbus, Ohio to work as a Clinical Fellow in Ohio State Hospital.
Thereafter he trained in a number of hospitals in Dublin before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include laparoscopic and hernia surgery and surgical oncology including colorectal and sarcoma surgery. He also has a major interest in ongoing clinical research.


Mr Richard Molloy qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1986. He commenced his training at Cork University Hospital prior to travelling to Boston to work in surgical research at Harvard University.
He subsequently trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh before travelling again to the United Sates to work as a Clinical Fellow at The Cleveland Clinic before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include hernia surgery, laparoscopic surgery and open and laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

Continued Greatness!

If you're not reading this series already, you should be! There's nothing about this series I don't like. The characters are great, love the writing, the artwork's fantastic (and I met the artist at Heroes Con and he's a cool guy!). So yeah, you should be reading this series! Also, I'm not a huge fan of Westerns, so I was a little hesitant to check it out at first, but it's awesome! Start with the first one so you know what's going on though. Haha

Bound to be good

Drake, Becky and the Brotherhood of the Sword of Abraham are escorting General Hume's locked coffin back to the Brotherhood's fortress but the General's wife, the witchy Missy Hume, is mustering her dark forces to save her husband once more. Meanwhile Gord Cantrell heads to his former master's home to find a way to destroy the guns - and face some personal demons.

The Sixth Gun series continues to be a thrilling delight and, three books in, shows no sign of slowing. In this book alone we have a daring train heist, a giant mummy, and a fortress breakout and that's not even counting the emotional upheavals in Gord and Becky's stories! Early on Drake gets separated from the group so the characters we follow in this book are mostly Becky and Gord and we're also introduced to a new character - Asher Cobb, the giant mummy.

The book contains what readers of the series love best: wild west action and dollops of supernatural craziness thrown in. Asher Cobb's story is tragic and mesmerising, almost Shakespearean in some details, drawn by Tyler Crook as series regular artist Brian Hurtt sits out one issue. You've got zombies attacking a speeding train and ghosts aplenty - I really want to talk about details in the book but don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read it.

I'll say that Gord gets some much needed character work while Becky continues to be a brilliant heroine who manages to get herself out of some pretty sticky situations with her wits and her gun. Drake's fate is a tantalising one as all members of the group are scattered but it looks like it's up to Becky herself to save him and, given her practicality and skill shown so far, I'd say she's more than capable of saving the man damsel in distress. And of course Brian Hurtt's art again is absolutely incredible. The sequences at the estate of Braxton Bell Hood were just amazing: haunting and desolate one minute, colourful and bursting with life the next - Hurtt is an artist who is so versatile, he can do it all and do it all with such panache and vision, it's unbelievable. If I see his name on a book, I'm picking it up - The Sixth Gun has made me a fan of his for life!

The Sixth Gun, Volume 3: Bound is another fine book in the series that won't disappoint readers - and if you're not reading this series, guys, check it out, it is a straight up awesome comic.

Marcia Muller's Deceptions makes good use of the Golden Gate Bridge's appeal to potential suicides in a short but gripping exploit of her series PI, Sharon McCone. Readers looking for lesser-known talent will welcome Janet Dawson's Invisible Time, which presents a grim view of life on the streets for two young people. Don Herron's gritty Knives in the Dark, with its Chandler-like plot line, convincingly depicts Prohibition-era tough guys. As usual, the overall caliber of the writing in this reprint volume is superior to the average all-original book in the series. (Feb.)

Superior entry in the series

Personally, I found this anthology great reading all the way through. I have a long history with SF, so that might help. True, the old classics are wonderful, but the excerpt from "Homeboy" alone ("Street Court") is worth the price of the book. Vollman's nightmarish "The Woman Who Laughed" is another standout from an author who is arguably the greatest living writer in the US. This surreal gem ironically captures the reality of the Tenderloin street. Joe Gores's take on the death penalty is tone-perfect, and persuasively argues that this barbaric holdover diminishes everyone. And it doesn't get any more "noir" than Fletcher Flora's 1953 story, "The Collector Comes After Payday," or Bill Pronzini's "Souls Burning." In general, this is an exceptionally strong collection in the "Noir" series, and that has a lot to do with the fact that, even today, SF is Noir City. Just look down any alleyway, in Chinatown, in the Mission, South of the Slot, the Tenderloin...its all there, and always has been.

She does a credible job in covering the reasons for the exodus and the major events that transpired, but the book's strength lies in the human details that transform historical names into real people. Readers learn, for example, that William Brewster hid out on board the Mayflower during its departure because he was a wanted man in England; Patricia Mullins (later Alden) had no interest in coming to America and begged her parents to stay behind; and a house-screw, which carpenter John Alden felt was a waste of space, eventually saved the travelers when the Mayflower sprang a leak en route. Frequent black-line illustrations and a diary format add to the appeal; the appended glossary, bibliography, and passenger list will be useful for report writers, too. Kay Weisman

Here presented is a very mixed group of separatists, adventurers, and crew members. Of the 32 children listed, two, Oceanus Hopkins and Peregrine Whjite were born at sea: William Butten, a servant to Samuel Fuller, died at sea. Also included is the Native American, Squanto, who played such a pivotal role in the survival of the colonists that first winter in 1620. Details that show the hand of Providence but just the facts, no moralizing

This is the best children's book about the Pilgrims available. I have read plenty. Hale's account is filled with stranger-than-fiction details that textbooks do not include about the incredible survival story of these brave men and women who encounter one disaster after another and yet somehow a remnant survives. She includes details about individuals so the reader can become familiar with personalities in Plymouth. I have recommended this book on many occasions since 2003.

"Mayflower People" is easy to read, but still interesting book. However, I was disappointed there wasn't more personal details about the people who came to America to start a new life despite the danger.
