Tools for improving workplace culture

Through a combination of unintentional (sometimes purposeful) ignorance, competing agendas, and stubbornness, we make our way through life, sometimes treating others with disrespect along the way, according to Paul Meshanko in this book. The problem is that when people feel disrespected, they don't give us their best.

In case the reader is not fully convinced about the importance of focusing on respect in the work environment, the author gives five compelling reasons:

* Disrespectful behaviour costs businesses billions of dollars per year in settlements
* Treating others with respect and dignity is the right thing to do
* Disrespect hijacks the victim's brain processes, making the victim less productive
* Disrespect decreases employee engagement
* The manner in which we treat others leaves a lasting emotional impression, which affects how they remember us

The book goes on to discuss a range of tools for building respectful work cultures, and then to provide a blueprint for taking action, which involves:

* Creating a consensus for taking action
* Gathering feedback on the prevalence of behaviours associated with respect
* Inviting those involved to participate in the journey
* Cultivating a respectful environment by providing training and reinforcement

I am fairly sceptical about business books written by non-scientists which claim to reveal the latest advances in brain science, and I am not sure that there really is a "science of neuroleadership" other than for marketing purposes, so I hesitated before investing the time into reading this book. I am happy to report that my fears were unfounded and the book is not filled with quack science.

The book is entertaining and easy to read, while at the same time providing valuable information and practical advice on a topic which is of vital importance to most workplaces.

Respect Entails Self-Esteem and Healthy Habits

Respect is often discussed yet the real impacts and real understanding of what it all means can be neglected. Paul Meshanko does a credible job in highlighting the positive impacts of respect along with the negative ones when respect is lacking. One of the great things about the book is how it works through the concept of respect. It isn't just something leaders need to do. It is something everyone needs to do, and this relates to the role of self-esteem in respect. While self-esteem delivers confidence, it also enforces accountability in relationships and builds mutual respect in mutually beneficial ways.

Along with the role of respect, the book highlights practices and models to embrace respect as an organization and an individual. The books isn't filled with lofty ideas on respect; it is very practical, honest, and essential.

Makes Total Sense

When you think about it, you do put forth more effort in anything when you feel respected and when you don't, you just don't. I liked this book because it was easy to read and understand and it had practical tips and suggestions that can be implemented immediately. It's beyond comprehension to me that so many companies (large and small) still do not consider or acknowledge how valuable to the bottom line employee engagement is and how to get it. On behalf of all of the disrespected employees out there, thanks for writing it!

About the Author

Dale N. Le Fevre started working with the nonprofit New Games Foundation (NGF) in 1975 as a volunteer. By the start of 1976 he was office manager and associate director. In 1977 he formed his own project, Play Express, which took New Games into schools, while he continued to give trainings for the NGF. In 1979 he left the United States for eight years to promote New Games worldwide.

To date, Le Fevre has conducted over 1,000 New Games workshops worldwide. His workshop participants have included Jews and Arabs in Israel in the early '80s; mixed races in apartheid-era South Africa; Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland in the early '80s and late '90s; and Croats, Serbs, and Muslims in Croatia and Serbia in '93, '94, and '98.

Le Fevre's publications include The Spirit of Play (previously published in five languages) and Parachute Games With DVD, coauthored with Todd Strong (Human Kinetics). He also produced several DVDs, including Complete Cooperative New Games, Best of New Games, Best of Cooperative Games, and New Parachute Games. He also produced the New Games CD-ROM, Revised.

Most recently, Le Fevre has founded a new company, Playworks, which works with businesses to use New Games to help resolve conflict, improve communication, build stronger teams, and reduce stress.

Le Fevre holds an MA in education from New York University and a BS in business from Valparaiso University, Indiana. In his free time he enjoys gardening, hiking, biking, dancing, and camping. He lives in Sheffield, England.

Excellent follow-up to the first book

Dear KJ Charles,

I reviewed the first book in this series here. Now that some time has passed I can say that it was probably my favorite m/m book last year. I am usually wary of reading the sequel to a beloved book, because I worry whether the sequel will live up to the high bar that the first book raised. I am glad that for me this sequel definitely did. Now I can worry about the third book.

This book should not be read as a stand – alone. If you do read this first, I do not think you will be terribly confused, because the adventure/mystery plot is a new one, but the book continues to build up the relationship between the main characters, Lucien Crane and Stephen Day, and most importantly it once again develops their characters in the midst of all that danger, magic and mayhem.

One of the main reasons why I often scoff at the possibility of a sequel (or series developed) to a book I loved is because so many authors seem to be so very fond of creating artificial conflicts between the couple, just to break them up for the sake of another book and then putting them back together at the end. But there is absolutely nothing artificial in the tension between Stephen and Lucien in this book, because it arises out of who they are, and the unresolved issues in their relationship are believable because their relationship is only several months old. And of course there is a nice external danger to both of them, which made perfect sense in the context of the mystery/adventure plot.

More importantly, the unresolved issues between the men do not make them act like idiots. For example, in the very beginning of the book somebody has decided to blackmail Lucien over his relationship with Stephen and made his demands known to Lucien. It is part of Lucien’s nature to try and protect Stephen (even though he is aware of Stephen’s abilities to protect himself). I was very pleased to see that it did not occur to Lucien to hide the blackmailer’s visit from Stephen, and he let his lover know as soon as possible about the blackmail attempt. I do not know why I was even worried for a second that this would be the source of a quarrel between the guys and a reason for manufactured conflict/breakup/angst (take your pick). I really must start trusting this writer not to lead me towards silly plot turns.

I was also pleased to see both men becoming more and more aware of each other flaws, but still loving each other more, not less. It was refreshing to see Lucien realize (with a little push from Merrick) how much Stephen’s pride means to him and try to curb his own “wanting to rescue” tendencies. At the same time Stephen would at least attempt to ask for help, hopefully because he understood that asking for help sometimes did not make him weak. And their declaration of love was so appropriate and so suited to both of them. When we see Stephen’s desire to protect Lucien at all costs despite what it seemed to have cost him in terms of his cherished job, it made me wonder whether these men are really that different inside. I decided not.

I must praise the adventure/mystery/magic storyline – I loved it just as much as I loved it in the first book. It made the characters shine, but more importantly it made me hold my breath wondering what would happen next and I read without hesitation the creepiness that I am usually more likely to pass in many other books. I did not want to miss a word; I had to know what was going on. I was also pleased to become more acquainted with Stephen’s partner Esther and other practitioners from his team. I am really hoping that I will see more of them in the next book of these series. I liked Esther a lot, but I think she could have used more fleshing out. Merrick, Crane’s manservant and friend was just as awesome in this book, and I while I was a bit scared to see the extent of his ruthlessness, I am glad the writer did not shy away from it. I liked that we learned more about what Merrick and Crane did in China as well.

The writing was just as wonderful as in the first book. Here is an example to give you a taste, so that you can decide whether it works for you. Lucien was asked to do a little translating work for Stephen and his team ;).

“Crane knew from Stephen that Mrs. Gold was the senior member of the team, and that she resented the common assumption that she was subordinate to the men. He addressed his next words to her. “Please don’t think this is a vulgar curiosity, but if you want me to translate when someone arrives, it would help to know what I need to discuss. What’s the problem?”
The practitioners glanced at each other, quick fleeting looks. Esther Gold said,
“Rats.”
“Rats?”
“Rats.”
“We got a rat problem.” Saint wore a malicious grin.
“I suppose you know you can hire a man and a dog in any pub in this city,” Crane offered blandly.
“It wouldn’t help,” Stephen said. “Joss, show him.”
Janossi put a toe under a fold of the sackcloth bundle and flipped it over. Crane walked over and looked at what lay within.
It was undeniably a rat. It long yellow teeth were bared in death. Its eyes were blood-filled and bulging, which Crane attributed to Stephen, since he had seen a man dead that way at his hands. Its matted, dirty brown pelt was stiff with filth and dust, its claws were grey and scaly, its naked tail pinkish. It was a rat like any other, except in one respect.
It was about four feet long, not counting the tail, and would have stood perhaps a foot high at the shoulder.”

I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. Oh and what a refreshing idea it is, to choose not to end every book in the series with the cliffhanger.

YES! Oh yes, I was waiting for this, and it did not disappoint!

After reading the first book, I preordered this, and kept checking back for the release date, and when it downloaded to my kindle last night, I gasped in pleasure and immediately started reading, now finishing at 2AM. And I LOVED THIS! Completely. And I am so happy there is going to be a third book in this series too.
Lucien and Stephen are such great, unique characters. They are very original, very smart (they figured out their problems and were brave enough to face their feelings and obstacles head on rather than cowering and creating more problems between them), and are so wonderful together. I just love them. Their attitudes and personalities always bring a smile to my face. Their interactions are often funny too, as are all the great secondary characters. There is a lot of very cool magic in this series as well, and some darker scenes, which just give the books more depth. The books feel very realistic for the time period, and I feel totally immersed in this world whenever I read them. My highest praise for KJ Charles on this series (which is her debut).
The story line is unique and brilliant and new, but continues some of the obstacles from the first book, while leading the reader on a grand mystery. Perfect grammar and editing, I do believe, and no faults that I can bring to mind. Reading this equates to 100% joy in my mind, and this is exactly the type of story I needed. I cannot wait to read the next one, and I want to read a fourth and a fifth at least too! I will take whatever I can get because these books just get to me. This series is among my favorites. Buy both and read them now! And then wait eagerly with me for the third.
P.S. I will never think of magpies the same way again. Now I rather want a magpie tattoo too.

First Rate followup to a stunning series!

I found this second book of the clever and witty 'A Charm of Magpies' series, a brilliant follow-up to one of my favorite “finds” of 2013, author KJ Charles’s 'The Magpie Lord'. If by chance you have not read that book, I urge you to do so, though I daresay 'A Case of Possession' can stand on its own quite nicely. Lord Crane is back, as is Stephen, his magical shaman lover, and four months after the adventures of the original book, the two men find themselves in the middle of another magic-wrought mystery: Who is summoning giant killer rats to London?

The wealthy, handsome, and indomitable Lucien Vaudrey has been busy, both, maintaining his China business interests and keeping track of his shaman lover, Stephen Day. His gifted lover seems to magically disappear after each of their lovely trysts. As a magistrate of magic, Stephen is on call at every hour of every day to make sure that all magical activities are valid, but surely his lover should have some time for him, shouldn’t he? They are in the beginning of their— whatever this is—and if Stephen stayed around long enough maybe they could figure it out, together.

Impoverished, but determined shaman Stephen Day has his mind and his heart full. His worries that his magical connection to Lord Crane will be discovered and the possibly of everyone finding out that he is a lover of men—well, a lover of Lord Crane at any rate— is second only to his dismay that he is in a “relationship” with a man so far above his station that said man will surely realize his mistake at any moment. Mysterious sightings of giant rats and the death of several Chinese shaman soon override his personal fears and force his focus to his justiciar duties. When he is accused of being a warlock, he realizes a noose is being drawn about himself, his lover and select Londoners, a noose that may expose Lord Crane’s magical prowess and have London overrun with giant, murderous rats.

Placing their individual concerns about their fledgling relationship to one side, Lucien and Stephen join forces and friends on this magical adventure to stamp out the escalating threat.

I love this series! I love its sharp, concise writing, it’s refreshingly original content and it’s two exquisite leads, whose independent personalities result in some of the most stimulating and intriguing repartee that I have had the pleasure to read. Part historical romance, part alchemic mystery, with a touch of steampunk science, K.J. Charles has delivered a marvelous and entertaining work, the dynamic pace of which is more than matched by the accessibility of its prose. From the cover art, which perfectly matches and effectively reveals the personalities of the two lead characters, to the sublime storyline and fitting ending, this is a fantastic book!

Excellent supporting characters, an exceptional plot, dreamy ambience and steamy lovemaking, make this a fabulous book to snuggle down with. Honestly, the story moves along so swiftly that I was aghast when I realized I’d reached the halfway mark… I did not want this one to end, but it did and in a magnificently satisfying manner. So, I have no choice but to ask: Um, may I have another, please?

Thank you, KJ Charles, for this wonderful addition to a scrumptious series. Magic and mystery and men… oh my! “A Must Read!”

Fewer new compelling ideas than vol 1, but well developed

The first book in the series introduced some very interesting quandaries about the relationship artificial intelligences and humans. This second book isn't as full of clever ideas, but develops the first books' ideas well.

The author is mostly writing from the position that AI is essentially a very clever species (more so than humans), and that the relationship will be mostly OK for us – but not completely. It's an interesting place on the spectrum of optimism pessimism.

Worth a read.

the only thing humans want from robots is gay sex?

I have read the two books in this series. They provide interesting ideas which i liked, i liked the robot psychology and playing out of scenarios of how humans and robots would interact. I have a problem with it in that the only goal of i think just about every human character is to have sex with robots, usually gay sex or sex with robots that simulate children. This was not as bad in the first book which i would rate four stars for interesting ideas. However, in the second book the whole book is about the main character trying to avoid humans having gay sex; getting raped in the beginning and getting into a sugar daddy relationship later. I can somewhat excuse this in that while it may not be true in a big picture, perhaps this can be true in a single individual's narrative. I still did not find it believable. I also did not find the world so believable as you have these machines made from self replicating nanobots but nothing else is, how can you have this fantastic technology and all it is used for is these robots? It should have effects on all technology. Also lots of Deus Ex Machina, he is constantly being rescued by powerful AI beings manipulating and pulling him out of trouble.

Pat Mills is the founding editor of 2000 AD, and the co-creator of A.B.C. Warriors, Nemesis The Warlock, Savage and Black Siddha. Massimo Belardinelli's career started with painting the backgrounds for animated cartoons for Rosi Studio in Rome. In 1977 he started working for 2000 AD and produced the art for some much-loved strips including Ace Trucking, Flesh and Slaine. Mike McMahon co-created perennial classics A.B.C. Warriors and The V.C.'s, and it was also gave Judge Dredd his classic, defining, "big boots" look - and two major characters in Max Normal and Rico Dredd. McMahon has also illustrated One-Offs, Ro-Busters, and provided a classic run on Slaine, where his dense, woodcut-styled art wows readers young and old

Excellent 80s comics - Interesting Character

This is one of the better comics from the 1980s that I did not read at the time. Slaine is an interesting and unique sword and sorcery comic character based upon Celtic myths. These are the first appearances of the character from the legendary weekly UK comic 2000 AD. The artwork is well done throughout the book, but Mike McMahon's artwork is especially good. It's a wilder, looser style than some of his Judge Dredd work and almost has a wood cut print look in black and white. The scenes with the Sky Chariot are really beautiful. The comic also has some humor usually tied to Slaine's sidekick Ukko. It's an interesting comic world writer/co-creator Pat Mills has created in Slaine. I'd say fans of the old 70s Marvel Conan comics and fans of sword and sorcerer fantasy novels would find things to like about Slaine and this collection.

The same rhetorical bomb throwing that drew attention to Baraka for his poem "Who Blew Up America" shoots through these stories written from 1974 through the present. Baraka works over issues of politics, race, sex and the afterlife, though the focus is always on ideas and wordplay. In "Conrad Loomis and the Clothes Ray," the narrator's friend Conrad reveals his new invention, a "clothes ray" that zaps the illusion of natty clothing onto the body of a naked person. Loomis describes himself as "outtelligent," which is superior to plain intelligence because it represents a brightness focused outward rather than inward. He also explains that while most people can understand problems, he can both "over and understand them." Linguistic ticks and characters like Loomis represent the engaging but intellectually imprecise core of this collection. At their best, these stories stretch language and churn out grimly whimsical notions, but Baraka also misfires, tweaking language into meaninglessness, or, for instance, melding The Matrix with hoary 9/11 conspiracy theories. In his signature politically piercing and poetic staccato style, Baraka offers a perspective on social and political changes and a fresh view of the possibilities that language presents in exploring human passions. The first part of this collection of short stories focuses on politics of the 1970s and 1980s, when economic prospects were so bleak that muggers were mugging muggers, black mayors replaced white mayors with very little else changing, and revolutionaries were severely compromised. In the second part, Baraka offers pieces from the late 1980s through the current day, again spotting hypocrisy on all fronts and exhibiting the joy of language and self-expression and an abiding appreciation for a well-told tale. Baraka is a keen observer of the outlandish and outrageous in politics and human behavior. About the Author
Amiri Baraka is the author of numerous books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. He was named Poet Laureate of New Jersey by the N.J. Commission on Humanities, from 2002-2004. His last two books of poetry, Somebody Blew Up America & Other Poems and Un Poco Low Coup received tremendous critical acclaim.

Far Out

Amiri Baraka's Tales of the Out & the Gone definitely made this reader pause and ponder various concepts presented in the book. This collection of short stories and poems, some previously released, are `Out' (of the ordinary) and `Gone' (crazier, wilder, deeper and way out). The stories cover everything from corrupt politicians to rhythm travel: being able to travel wherever and whenever a song is played.

Amiri Baraka is a true literary genius. His manipulation of language and grammar is truly unique. His style and brilliance may serve as a hindrance for many readers in search of a straightforward story. Tales of the Out & the Gone will appeal to true Baraka fans; however, readers of mainstream lit may feel a bit lost with this read. As Baraka states in the story `A Little Inf'; "If this is hard to understand, I can understand."
