Fantastic Book!

This book made me hungry!! I should probably explain that a bit. Living in Pennsylvania, and the specific area I grew up in, I can remember heading to Lancaster PA (better known as Amish Country!) where they have the most amazing Amish culture where you get to see how the Amish live and if you are very lucky you can speak with them and learn quite a bit. Also I have a friend who lives all the way on the other side of the coast and up in Canada who has an ongoing joke with me about me being Amish, but I see myself going far away from my book review and the reason this book made me hungry! My apologies to you, dear book review reader. Anyway, as for the hungry thing, if you are ever in Lancaster PA, please do yourself a favor and go to the Shady Maple. You will understand the meaning of the hunger and likely thank me for it later (unless you are on a diet or something)! This book made me hungry, and it also made me glad I took the time to read it because it was a fitting final book in the series, highly enjoyable to read, and very well written!

This is the third and final book in the series. It follows, "The Heart's Frontier" and "A Plain and Simple Heart". You are quite able to read this book on its own if that is what you choose to do, it's what I did. However, I would probably recommend not doing that! I really sort of wish I had read the first two, well, first. I actually didn't realize there were two others because I don't always pay attention like that when I get myself all excited to sit down and read a book knowing I'm going to be writing up a review. I think it would be a better deal to read the first two so that you know the characters a bit better and have the chance to know some of the other characters mentioned. However, that said, you can just read this one as it is and follow along just fine. I am going to go backwards though and get the first two soon because I can't really not read them since this one was really very good.

If you've ever read my reviews before, you likely know I don't give away the story; at all. You really must read for yourself because that's the way of it. Go get the book and read it! It's worth it no matter what to be able to say you did it! However, I will say that this book had many good points. I really enjoyed how well it was written by the authors. The historic research that went into it was brilliant. The characters held onto their beliefs and faith through everything and struggled with dilemmas that challenged both at times. The emotions they had felt real and, thanks to the cover picture of the book, you pictured the character as you felt what they did through the wonderful writing. You cried with them, laughed with them, and sometimes wanted to kick a person or two! I really enjoyed the writing and the character development.

Although the book could be a bit predictable at times, it was one of those times where predictability just worked. In the really real world sometimes things are predictable, but you still have to take the time to get there and that's where the story lies. I really enjoyed this book and will be looking at more by these two authors!

This is the third and last book in this series, which I am sorry to see come to an end, and this time the focus is Jesse Montgomery. You can read this volume as a stand alone with no problem but it is a lot more fun when you know the character's growth from the first two books. If this was a movie it would be the kind that John Wayne made during his middle period and he would be Jesse. There is a cattle rancher trying to drive off the Amish farmers and Jesse stands up to him almost getting killed in the process. Katie tends to him and the sparks fly but each is wounded and needs to heal before their romance can actually work. In the meantime the battle is on for the safety of Apple Grove. "A Cowboy At Heart" is a romance but it is much, much more. Ms. Copeland and Smith explore the themes of Grief over the loss of a spouse and Standing your spiritual ground when it seems that all is lost. I enjoyed this book a lot and am looking forward to the next series from this talented duo.

Great Inspirational Read - 4-1/2 *

In 1886 - Jesse Montgomery is feeling restless, however, he feels better than he ever did now that he has conquered his alcoholic demons and hard living ways. Staying with his newly married friend Colin and his wife Emma Jesse has contemplated whether or not he might be able to settle down and assimilate a similar lifestyle change for himself. When asked to ride over and attempt to help out Colin's father-in-law, an Amish man, from an unscrupulous cattle baron who is trying to steal his land, Jesse was shot, seriously wounded and but for the grace of God, might have died.

Katie Miller, a young Amish widow with a healing touch, luckily was on hand to help tend Jesse during his recovery. Even though Katie found herself attracted, she could not risk falling in love with an Englisch cowboy. Yet, she believes that God does have a plan for her, but questions whether that future included a reformed cowboy?

*** Although this was not the first book in the AMISH OF APPLE GROVE series, I had no problem whatsoever in following the gist of the story signifying that A COWBOY AT HEART is definitely a stand-alone book! The writing team of Copeland and Smith made this a total enjoyable read with lovely characters and a very inspiring story. I was very impressed with Jesse's horse Rex who was something of a hero in this story as well. However, the entire cast with the exception of the scurrilous cattle baron and his employees, were a wonderful treat whom the authors created with great feeling and love.

While reading I did have an inkling as to the reason of why Katie, who was quite attracted to Jessie, was so adamant as to not wanting to re-marry again. The inclusion of Katie's exceptionally stern father-in-law, so soured on life after the death of his son, was a good tool used to give more depth to the insurmountable hurdles Jessie and Katie faced before there might be a happily-ever- after for them. Naturally, the entire scenario of what the cattle baron was trying to do to the peaceable Amish was thoroughly disgusting, but made for a great plot point as well, and gave Jessie the opportunity to do something very heroic.

Bottom Line: A COWBOY AT HEART was a great inspirational read and included a lovely romance with great characters and a solid story that moved along very nicely and at a very good pace.

Fitzsimons falls short

For anyone unaware of the controversies and uncertainties about the historical truths of the life of Ned Kelly, this book will be an enjoyable read, as the story is well told and the details and embellishments do indeed liven it up. However, the story of Ned Kelly has been told many many times, almost universally in sympathetic terms, so one immediately has to ask, why another one? What new angle is he going to adopt? I read Fitzsimons book "Eureka" and found it enthralling. He set the story in the widest possible context of Victorian pioneering and political and social life in the mid 19th century and so I was hoping he would do the same for the Kelly story. My hopes were raised further by pre-publication advertising for the book, claiming Fitzsimons would be "weighing in on all the myths legends and controversies generated by this compelling and divisive Australian Rebel"

In fact the book does nothing of the sort. It is unfortunately just another sympathetic and very long recounting of the same old stories everyone already knows, with a noticeable absence of any discussion of any number of the critical "myths legends and controversies": and almost nothing that is new other than Fitzsimons own embellishments designed to "bring the story to life'. For example he doesn't mention or comment on the allegations of the kellys that Constable Fitzpatrick groped Ellens 14 year old daughter Kate, the supposed trigger for the entire "outbreak"; the uncertainties about George King and his fate are not mentioned, the forensic evidence relating to the numbers of wounds and bullets in the bodies of the dead policemen at Stringybark Creek isnt discussed, there is almost no mention of the entire "Republic" conspiracy so beloved of Fitzsimons mentor Ian Jones, and so on. It would appear that the author was trying not to offend anyone on either side of the ongoing debate about Kellys legacy - good or bad - and inevitably has produced something which neither offends nor excites. The "elephant in the room" in my opinion is his failure to read and list among the 60 or so books in his bibliography, arguably the most important and original work on the subject in the last twenty years, Ian MacFarlanes "The Kelly Gang Unmasked". Fitzsimons has said that the reason he didnt read The Kelly Gang Unmasked was because Ian Jones "hated it".This failure reduces the books authority, emasculates the story somewhat, and relegates Fitzsimons book to "just another sympathetic Kelly story" In my view its not good enough to displace Ian Jones "Ned kelly : a short life" from the top of the pro-kelly reading list.

Great book

The English class system has a lot to answer for. By design it pitted working class (the Police) against the remainder of the the working class ensuring that all concerned are just pawns in their greater game. Parallels can be seen today where corporations use working class to do their dirty work - using workers to act without conscious against those of the same ilk. The more I read of Peter FitzSimons work the more I see we are still just miners and selectors versus the squatters.

The book first discusses storms in the atmosphere. These are systems that convert inflows of water vapor into outflows of raindrops and snowflakes that are precipitated to the underlying surface. This is followed by separate chapters on how water is delivered from the atmosphere to surface ecosystems; water budgets at the surface and in the soil; evaporation from these systems back to the atmosphere; water in the local air and rocks; and horizontal movement of water transformed by ecosystems where the preceding storages and fluxes were located.

Fantastic book for practical medicine

I am usually a little numb about looking at medicine handbooks. Most of them state basically the same thing as the next book on the shelf. I was AMAZED at how different this book was. Written by doctors who are "in the trenches", the points brought up are practical and helpful. I was stunned at how many chapters had new and insightful information without a lot of fluff. That is not to say the book is hard to read, it flow well and has a logical format, just has a great deal of high density information. The authors knew who their audience was. I am faculty at an Internal Medicine residency and have recommended it to all my housestaff.

About the Author
In 1970, while students at Humboldt State University, Mike and Judy Phillips began what would become the One Way BookShop as a small, informal source of Christian books and materials for their fellow students. Over the next two decades God prospered those small beginnings, and now the bookstore is a thriving part of the Humboldt County Christian community.

Dream of Life may be the finest fiction work that Michael Phillips has ever done

Dream of Life, the second book in "The American Dreams Series," may be the finest fiction work that Michael Phillips has ever done, which is no small feat given that he has published over 100 books.

In this pre-Civil war saga that explores the workings of the Underground Railroad, there is greater depth than in his "Shenandoah Sisters" series and the "Carolina Cousins" series, which are lighter reads. The story is more intricate and the characters and ideas more fully developed.

In the first section, Phillips weaves in the forced relocation of the Cherokee tribe, which is outstanding. This could be made into a fascinating set of books. It slows down a little in the second section as the story swings back to plantation owners in the South, who take a stand against slavery on the basis of their spiritual convictions, but it picks up steam once the stage is set.

Along the way, the theologically discerning reader will come across a few ideas that give pause. Although we are all God's children in the sense that God created human life, in a peculiar sense, only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ are born as children into His family. There is a hint that in the end we all share the same destiny, that it's just a matter of awakening to our sonship.

Phillips' characters probe the true nature of God. There's no doubt that our finite minds cannot fully comprehend God's goodness. It's wonderful to have a fine writer like Phillips showing us more of God's love. We need this view of God, but it's not the whole picture. The truth revealed in Scripture and in the person of Christ is where righteousness and peace are joined together. It's where mercy and truth kiss. Christ was full of grace and truth.

It's true that God is nothing less than the Father that Jesus Christ revealed. It's also equally true that Jesus spoke of the need for repentance and judgment to come. All Scripture is God-breathed, inspired by Him. The words in both Testaments that speak of God's wrath and judgement are just as valid as the words of Jesus. One may wonder if in reaction to the ways God has been misrepresented, Phillips has swung too far in the other direction.

It's obvious that Phillips deplores dogma. Dogma can be defined as the tenets or teachings of a church. It's not a bad thing to be against teachings that misrepresent God or the truths of Scripture. On the other hand, the Bible is clear that we are to hold to sound teaching.

It's been said that any view of the Fatherhood of God that fails to adequately consider the cross of Christ is deficient. It's not clear what Phillips is saying on these matters. How far does God's love reach? It's a question that Phillips, like George MacDonald before him, seems willing to consider.

Having said this, some readers may write Phillips off, but that would be too miss out on the wisdom exhibited in the noble characters that he creates. The controversial ideas are handled in a subtle way. Those who like to have their thinking challenged will enjoy reading Phillips.

He offers wonderful glimpses and penetrating insights into Divine and human nature. The realism and historical accuracy are noteworthy. The uncommon reflections provoke thought, which probably accomplish what Phillips is after--a more realistic view of God and the Christian life.

Too much proselytizing, too little story

Dream of Life by Michael Phillips was a serious disappointment to me. To be honest, I was unable to finish the book. I've read Dream of Freedom, and at about half the size of DOL, it was an enjoyable read about blacks and whites fighting together and doing what they can to combat the evils of slavery in the first half of the 19th century. This book includes Native Americans in the mix, and when Phillips wrote about the people, the book was enjoyable. Unfortunately, page after page was devoted to proselytizing. It seems that every character felt the need to give a speech about God. Yes, this is a Christian book, but the speeches seemed out of place and forced. Occasionally no character was even delivering the speech, it was just a sermon from the writer! Christian books can get away with the intermittent character trying to persuade another character about the love of God, but when nearly half the book is taken up with such speeches, the book is less a work of fiction and more a theological discussion.

This series continues with good characters. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the novel entwined in a good story. I look forward to the next in the series.

When I Would Do Good, Evil is Always Present

In the gritty, fast-paced novella, Got, D, a new writer to Akashic Books, deftly weaves a rare second person narrative of a nameless protagonist who cannot seem to catch a break. "He" witnesses his father's death and his mother demise by drugs, stays in various foster homes, and is finally rescued as an adolescent by a couple who give him a middle-class sense of family. But after his first year of college, he comes home to find them being carried out in body bags, and he again is an orphan, left to survive on his own.

He has a cushy job making drops for Tony Star; all he has to do is pick up and deliver and he gets a thousand dollars a week, enough to pay tuition and indulge in a beautiful sexy piece. Only this time something goes wrong, the money is gone, and Tony is threatening bodily harm, demanding his due. He has been got. Big time. He should have known better. Could he have been set up? He returns to the old NewYork neighborhood and enlists the help of his homeboys, Chief and Will. It does not take long for things to spiral out of control, leaving him wondering just what is up. Who is out to get him?

These 171 pages, a well-written tale, packs a lot of grit with a tightly woven plot. The second person point-of-view, rarely used in fiction works well; not every writer can pull it off, but D does it seamlessly without compromising the storyline. The gunplay and chase scenes against the New York City landscape, as well as the pacing, adds just enough drama to get one caught up in the reality of the characters. Fast-paced and filled with surprises, Got by D is recommended for those who love urban literature.

Fine for What It Is

This short first entry in Akashic Books' street-lit imprint capably sails through well-charted waters without delivering anything particularly new or interesting. Written in a somewhat awkward second-person voice, the story follows a 20something Brooklyn college student through one very unpleasant night. Although he once ran the streets, he's now more or less a square -- other than his weekly gig as a bagman for a local mobster. The story is set in motion when he falls prey to the dexterous tongue of a stripper and loses the money bag. What follows is a pretty standard "you got 'till dawn to get my money back or you're dead" tale, as he drives all over Brooklyn and beyond, tracking down the thieves with the help of two old friends (luckily, the one is a gun dealer and the other a hacker-extraordinaire). The college boy turns on the juice pretty quickly, becoming a killing machine over the course of the night, as the story unfolds at a rapid pace. For street lit, it's pretty well done, although rather predictable. There is a "twist" of sorts, although it will be pretty obvious to most readers (if not the protagonist). Overall, it's fine for what it is, but unlikely to leave any kind of lasting impression on the average crime reader.
