Great artist-driven comics

Solo was an interesting concept that I missed the first time around: let an artist (not writers) do whatever they want for an entire issue: they write their own stuff or work with a writer of their choosing on whatever they want -- established characters or original work). This hardcover collects the entire run and in looks great. As you'd imagine with an anthology series, some stuff will be better than others, but it is all of very high quality (Darwyn Cooke's issue is especially good).

This was an amazing experiment in mainstream comics, and it's probably one of the more innovative things DC has done in a while. I'd love to see a Solo 2.

Great Series. Wonderfully Collected

I picked up the deluxe edition of SOLO right away. It's a great series showcasing some great talent. The book is wonderfully collected too. If you look at some other reviews for other DC HC collected works (excluding most Absolute editions) some are critical of the production choices DC took in producing other hard covers. I'm pleased to say that I have no complaints with this. Opening it up and paging through, I found that it reads really well.
In terms of content, I really liked the short story format and the creative talent showcased here is probably the best you'll see in any collected edition. Paul Pope, Howard Chaykin, Michael Allred, and many more are featured in this book. With that in mind, there may be some stories that may not be liked by everybody, but that just comes down to individual preference.
Lastly, I want to make special mention of Darwyn Cooke's work featured in SOLO. His issue of SOLO won the EISNER for "Best Single Issue." Cooke is one of my favorite creators in comics and his issue doesn't disappoint. It's one of the best things I have read in a while and his issue is a highlight of the book.
Very satisfied. Five stars.

DC goes zine

The good thing about Solo is should you not like a particular story, it is going to end in a few pages. The bad thing about solo is should you like a particular story, it is going to end in a few pages. That is the deceptive thing about this book, despite its heft no individual story runs for more than a dozen pages. Given the large number of stories there are going to be a some winners (The Last Time I Saw Paris, Back Bone, Batman A-Go-Go, Time Sale's issue), some losers (The Road to Samarra, Poison, Drive) and a broad spectrum in between. The most important thing about Solo is that the art is driving the story not the other way around. This focus in art lends itself to reinterpretation of classic characters (Superman Is) and ample use of pastiche (half the book). These diverse styles combined with the short stories led a friend to comment that DC had made a great zine. I can't argue with the zine comparison: personals stories, eclectic styles, experimental imagery, etc.. If that makes Solo sound too hipster then maybe you should go elsewhere; New 52 will still make you happy. On the other hand if you miss the days when comics were not written with a movie adaptation in mind, Solo is for you.

This one hundred and sixty-seven page hardbound book is only four by six inches but is packed full of advice, admonishment and helpful suggestions for Christian men of all ages. Due to it being so compacted, it can be stored easily in a briefcase, large jacket pocket or car compartment and used as a daily devotional. Using mainly the New International Version of the Holy Bible, other versions are noted such as the NKJV, NASB, NLT, KVJ and TEV.

Each topic page starts with a title that is bold and writes out one or two Bible verses. Below are several paragraphs or bullet point items related to the topic, either on a personal level from the author or advice given as if he is talking to you over a cup of coffee. There is a one sentence prayer at the bottom of the page.

The fifteen separated one minute prayers are highlighted and fill up the complete page but have no topic theme listed at the top so one does not know what the focus or direction the prayer is going until they read it.

Some content topics are titled: Your Sins Will Find You Out, Cultivating Intimacy, Rules Give Freedom, Messes are a Blessing, Be Humble in Spirit, A Friend Who Goes the Extra Mile, I am the Clay, Time to Move On, Good Old Cowboy Advice, Act Like Men and A Life of Praise. A short prayer is "Father God, I want to be a man that properly uses Your principles in handling the financial blessings You have given me. Amen."

Great French study aid.

I disagree with previous reviewer who compares Schaum's Outline of French Vocabulary with travel phrase book. This book is not comparable to any phrase book in term of details and depth. One thing, this is not for beginners and this is not a short cut to learning French. So, do not expect to find explanation on grammar and usage. It does save your time from searching the dictionary to find useful vocabulary for french conversations.

Thomas Wright focuses especially on state terrorism in Chile under General Augusto Pinochet (1973–1990) and in Argentina during the Dirty War (1976–1983). The author probes the background of these regimes, the methodology of state terrorism, and the human rights movements that emerged in urgent response to the brutality of institutionalized torture, murder, and disappearance. He also discusses the legacies of state terrorism in the post-dictatorial period, particularly the bitter battle between demands for justice and the military's claim of impunity. Central to this struggle was the politics of memory as two radically different versions of the countries' recent history clashed: had the militaries conducted legitimate wars against subversion or had they exercised terrorism based on a misguided concept of national security?

The book offers a nuanced exploration of the reciprocal relationship between state terrorism and its legacies, on one hand, and international human rights on the other. When the Chilean and Argentine militaries seized power, the international human rights lobby was too weak to prevent the massive toll of state terrorism. But the powerful worldwide response to these regimes ultimately strengthened international human rights treaties, institutions, and jurisprudence, paving the way for the Rwanda and Yugoslavia genocide tribunals and the International Criminal Court. Indeed, Chile and Argentina today routinely try and convict former repressors in their own courts.

This compelling history demonstrates that the experiences of Chile and Argentina contributed to strengthening the international human rights movement, which in turn gave it the influence to affect the outcome in these two South American countries. Ironically, the brutal regimes of Chile and Argentina played the major role in transforming a largely dormant international lobby into a powerful force that today is capable of bringing major repressors from anywhere in the world to justice. These intertwined themes make this book important reading not only for Latin Americanists but for students of human rights and of international relations as well.

Jeffrey D. Long, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is also the Head Statistician for Neurobiological Predictors of Huntington's Disease (PREDICT-HD), a longitudinal NIH-funded study of early detection of Huntington's Disease. His undergraduate degree is from the University of California at Los Angeles, and his doctoral degree is from the University of Southern California in the area of quantitative psychology.

Wonderful!

If you are looking for an _applied_ guide to using R's lmer and the lme4 package for your repeated measures/longitudinal analyses, you are home. This book is really, really great.

I came to this text comfortable with both R and mixed models, but I have had no formal guidance using the lme4 package or its predecessor (nlme). I had a hard time finding any easily-digestible information about appropriate coding conventions for lme4. I found the free R code for this textbook online, and it was great! Then I started reading the textbook online (some portions are available for free on Google Books). At that point, I realized that I just had to have the full book in my hands. It was that useful, and very readable. I was tired of scrounging around on the R message boards. I needed one-stop shopping - and nearly everything I need is in this book. The only thing missing is a thorough discussion of assumption violations and subsequent approaches should they arise. I guess Long assumes you have thorough knowledge of how to test and correct for assumption violations in R already, which could be an issue for readers.

I am no stats or math whiz, and I don't have a thorough or fluent understanding of the inner mathy workings of mixed models or of the lme4 package, so I can't provide any critique of the text on those grounds. Hopefully someone else will provide some notes there. For what it's worth, I can say that I did some reading on the R message boards prior to purchasing this book, and nothing I've read in Long violates anything I read/skimmed by Douglas Bates or Ben Bolker (the authors of lme4). Everything in the text is also consistent with suggestions from stats-oriented professors in my department (I'm a PhD student).

Bottom line: Readable, practical guide to longitudinal analysis using lme4. Abundant R code. Understandable, clear use of sample data.

would like to understand more about how to handle model comparisons ...

From the perspective of someone learning mixed models in regards with lm4. Really wanted to understand plotting results of predicted models in original units when DV and time variable are transformed. Couldn't find discussion of how to interpret coefficients from transformation. Also, would like to understand more about how to handle model comparisons when AIC and BIC don't agree. Still found book informative and pretty easy to read. Having explanations of R script very important. Note: I had to return electronic copy because script examples were too small to read and there was no way to fix. Hard copy was fine. Book website could have more resources IMO.

1. Excellent number of worked examples.
2. The explanations for the worked examples were first rate. You could easily use this book for self study.

Cons:
I really can't think of anything that I found wrong or bad about the book.

very interesting, insightful, and FUN!

This is a great little book giving a first-person glimpse of several lifestyles that are now, perhaps sadly, gone for good. First of all there is post-war England, which, even though there was rationing and rebuilding, is still a wonderful lesson to all of us about a people determined to succeed in the face of terrible destruction. Then, of course, there is the life of a novice in a monastery or nunnery, rarely chosen as a lifestyle any longer and certainly not something we in the US know much about. Eleanor Stewart entered an order in France and had to adjust to a new life and language. This is a wonderful and uplifting tale and biography of a great soul, who at an early age lived her life searching for the meaning of life! I know it has been published recently in hard copy in the UK but you don't have to wait for a printed version to enjoy this. It's worth it.

Fascinating!

I loved this book. The story is engaging, insightful, thoughtful and funny. You learn to love the characters and there are many! Along with being a wonderful story, I learned a lot about faith, religious life, medicine, and life in England and France in the 1960s. Not only did this book make me laugh and entertain me, it made me reflect and grow. I look forward to the sequel!

Dixon guides the reader through a tangle of philosophical issues related to the concept of emotion and the various ways in which emotions are morally significant. She demonstrates that claims about animal emotion often stand in for a more fundamental property it is believed that animals and humans share—namely morality.

Do some animals have "morally laden" emotions? Dixon examines various arguments in favor of this idea and finds them lacking. Her close analysis elucidates the concept of emotional kinship, the role of emotions as virtues, Darwin’s principle about evolutionary continuity, the nature of primate empathy, the possibility of morally appraising children and animals, and how the animal narrative should be used as a methodology for thinking about the animal mind. Each chapter begins with an animal story or anecdote to illustrate the theme to be covered.

Dixon concludes that we are unwarranted in attributing to animals morally laden emotions.
