About the Author
Thomas Glave is an O. Henry Award-winning author and was named a Village Voice “Writer on the Verge” in 2000. He is the author of Whose Song? and Other Stories, Words to Our Now: Imagination and Dissent (Lambda Literary Award winner), The Torturer’s Wife (finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize), and editor of the anthology Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Lesbian and Gay Writing from the Antilles (Lambda Literary Award winner). His most recent work has appeared in the New York Times, the Kenyon Review, and Callaloo. Glave has been the Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Professor at MIT, a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, and in 2014 will be the Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies, University of Warwick.

A literary masterwork

I've waited, some time now, for a book to represent the beauty, difficulty, and divinity of what it means to be black and gay in the world, and Thomas Glave provides this text as if having received a message from on high. It's meticulous in its articulation, peerless in its boldness, stellar in its analysis, and remarkable for the way it refuses the comfort of stereotypes. The ancestors have sent this one. Read him. This is humanity at its best!

This is worth its weight in gold!!!!

I love this!!! Working in a Spanish speaking community, I decided to pick this up and it is so easy to use. The book is organized into sections/different fields for ease of use in case you need specific terminology say for ob/gyn or renal or Oxygen related questions. The question format is AWESOME!!! It has just the right balance of conversational Spanish and medical Spanish that makes this book a keeper. Here is a link that I found so you can see how the book looks from the inside. No doubt that you’ll love it as much as me. It’s possible you might be able to get some of the other medical Spanish books at the library just to see how they look and so you can compare, but in my opinion, with this book, your search for the “holy grail” ends here. Cassi da Conch is an inspiring story about a little conch shell who discovers the importance of being herself.

Cassi hopes to win the Caribbean Conch Contest like Mama Conch and Grandmama Conch did many year before. Contestants will be judged on their unique and special qualities. Cassi isn't sure what makes her special and asks her friend Snapper for help. Snapper suggests they see what the other contestants are up to get some ideas so Cassi can win the contest. Will Cassi ever realize she only needs to look within herself to find what makes her extraordinary?

The bright illustrations and charming characters add to the enjoyment of this charming little story that teaches children to be themselves.

A Caribbean Delight

In the deep blue ocean, Cassi prepares to enter into the Caribbean Conch Contest. The pressure is on as both her mother and grandmother have previously won the prestigious competition.

Cassi teams up with her good friend Snapper and visits the other conch's in the competition to see how she can shine, sparkle and stand out enough to win.

Will Cassi find something unique that will make her standout from the rest and perhaps win the competition?

A story about accepting your gifts and not try to be something/one else, Cassi's journey of believing in herself just as she is an exciting and colorful one. Told with a Caribbean accent, the story flows at a pace that a child would follow easily. Adults will enjoy reading this story as well as children being able to read it for themselves.

Cassi's adventure is a real delight to read. The images that explain the words are vibrant, playful and inviting adding a real depth to the story. A lovely touch is the authors explanation of the different types of conch's that can be found in the sea and what makes them unique - the crux of the competition. Cassi da Conch is sure to be a favorite with everyone. A recommended read.

Edward Hall is Artistic Director of both Propeller and the Hampstead Theatre, London, and an Associate Director of the National Theatre, the Old Vic, and the Watermill Theatre. He has directed at the National, the RSC, Chichester, and theatres worldwide: Boston, New York, Chicago, Denver, Tokyo, winning several major awards. He has also worked extensively on television and radio. Roger Warren's numerous publications include five editions for the Oxford Shakespeare series; he has also prepared many performing editions, especially for Propeller and the Peter Hall Company. He has collaborated with Edward Hall on eleven Shakespeare productions in the last decade.

In Confronting Omnicide: Jewish Reflections on Weapons of Mass Destruction¸ Rabbi Daniel Landes has collected essays, by fifteen prominent Jewish thinkers and leaders, that address these issues.
The authors of these essays represent a broad spectrum of religious and political ideologies and include Reuven Kimelman, Irving Greenberg, Lord Immanuel Jakobovits, Pinchas H. Peli, and Maurice Friedman. They share the basic assumptions that the threat of global destruction through nuclear and chemical warfare is a real possibility against which humans have no “fail-safe” mechanism; that we must search for solutions while avoiding apathetic fatalism and false optimism; and that the Jewish people have a special responsibility, because of their history and their culture, to respond to this crisis.
Drawing on a rich variety of Jewish literary sources, including the Bible, rabbinic literature, and Jewish law and thought, the contributors to Confronting Omnicide explore different facets of the nuclear threat. For example, does Jewish law distinguish between civilians and combatants in the struggle to defeat an enemy, and if so, how does this affect military decisions? In Jewish law, owning wild dogs is prohibited as a violation of the biblical verse, “Thou shalt not bring blood upon thy house,” because of the seeming inevitability of the dog attacking the innocent. Is the very possession of a nuclear and chemical arsenal wrong, then, if its existence enables us to bring blood upon the collective house of humankind? Jewish tradition has classically required a just order before agreeing to peace with an enemy. But is that a realistic requirement in an age when peace is merely the absence of overt hostilities?
Many of these essays also examine the Holocaust and the parallels and distinctions that can be made between it and absolute destruction. The paradox of power, the threat of its concentration and the vulnerability of its absence, is also discussed in this volume.
Confronting Omnicide does “advocate specific strategic and political positions,” Rabbi Landes states. “It rather attempts to create a vocabulary and language for confronting the difficult decisions that will need to be made by both policy makers and an informed citizenry.” Its perspectives provide insightful guidance and encourage the development of a sense of individual and communal responsibility as we navigate our perilous journey into the twenty-first century.
