About the Author
In 1970, while students at Humboldt State University, Mike and Judy Phillips began what would become the One Way BookShop as a small, informal source of Christian books and materials for their fellow students. Over the next two decades God prospered those small beginnings, and now the bookstore is a thriving part of the Humboldt County Christian community.

Family is very important to Mike. He and his wife, Judy, have taught their three sons, Patrick, Robin and Gregory, at home throughout their education. Home schooling enables the family to frequently accompany Mike in his work-related travels.

Excellent book! Truly engulfing--I couldn't put it down!

This is one of the first Christian fiction books I have read--it was a great first pick. Michael Phillips has a great way of setting the stage in this story--giving just enough details for the reader to get a firm grasp of the setting and characters without being overly burdensom. The historical background was extremely interesting as well. I was actually transported back in time. I was also truly amazed at how Michael Phillips intertwined the gospel of salvation into the story in a realistic and relevant way. After reading this book, I feel compelled to read every other book from Michael Phillips--especially if they are this good! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

What an excellent book!

In The Eleventh Hour Phillips manages to capture the emotions so long untold. This book begins pre-WWII in Europe with a loving, Godly man and his beautiful daughter who is still more child than woman. After they meet some American diplomats who are soon invtied for a visit you come to Lebanshaus, or the House of Life. Baron von Dortmann and his family have always opened their doors to everyone seeking spirtual and physical peace. He teaches his new friends the gift of God and his daughter Sabina helps her new friend Matthew in many ways. Secrets unfold along the way making this book suspensful near the end where the remarkable power of God will show itself in full force as it does throughout the book! Anyone who seeks spirtual fullfillment, wants to learn about Nazi persecution or just likes Michael Phillips will most certainly not be dissapointed in this book.

Love the Secret of the Rose Series

I read these books over and over again at my public library and I'm so happy to finally have this series available as an eBook version on Kindle!! I immediately bought the series. Such an inspiring story of faith, courage and commitment set in Prussia during Nazi reign. The books are filled with suspense, drama, enduring faith and enduring love. Excellent historical fiction series.

So, it wasn't the best...

I really dislike stories where women make themselves the victims. The woman in this story takes a horrific beating and rape from her husband after she is caught cheating. He breaks her ribs and I think her cheekbone from punching her during this rape. She refuses to press charges because it would be too hard on her adult children. Are you serious??? I don't get this reasoning, and I never will. Men who attack women should be in jail or prison...or dead.

Karma.. Part 1 of Lily's story is heartbreaking. But Part 2 (Full Circle) makes it all worth it.

Lily Lambert after 19 years married to a man who took away her sense of self has decided she wants a change now that her two twin boys are college age. She has no idea that what starts out with her just joining a gym to finally work on losing the weight her husband has always made fun of her for will result in causing such traumatic and heartbreaking effects on the herself. The title to this book says it all.

This is not an easy book to get through. You are rooting for Lily in the beginning to make those positive changes. You can see her marriage has been a sham and she deservers so much better. And at first she does start to get those things. The secondary characters are wonderful in both books. Her best friend is happy for her finally seeing that she’s been married to a controlling man that killed her self esteem. She meets wonderful friends at the gym and even a man who makes her feel like no other. When she starts this journey she didn’t set out to fall in love and break her marriage vows. Even though she deserves to be happy she didn’t take the path to get there she should have and karma comes around and causes devastation.

The end of this book is not a happy ending. But this is only Part 1 of Lily’s story. Even though its painful to read and the cheating a big trigger for many in romance world, the 2nd part of Lily’s story in Full Circle was so powerful and rewarding to read you understand that the first part had to happen to get to the second part.

Both books in this series should be read back to back to get the Full Circle effect (pun intended)

An emotional and engaging read...

This little debut novel took me by surprise. And, the setting is in one of my favorite places... England.(smile) This was a very emotional and engaging read from start to finish. If you are a woman who understands what it is like to feel like you've given up your identity once the children were born then you will find it easy to connect to the character of Lily. This book also addresses the issue of spousal abuse and at times I wanted to jump into the book and throttle her husband Greg. I still do! He is an angry, controlling and self absorbed man who cares nothing for Lily's needs and wants. Lily feels unloved, ugly and awkward and her self esteem has taken a beating in an 18 yr. empty and loveless marriage. She is overweight and has a distorted view of herself which is also something most of us women can relate too. How many of us are constantly comparing ourselves to what our idea of a perfect body is supposed to be? When you start checking off all of the flaws it's easy to start to believe that you are not attractive or beautiful... and this is where Lily is at the age of 37.
Lily eventually decides to take a brave step forward and she decides to join the local gym. Lily is very clumsy and as she's walking through the door she quite literally falls into the arms of... James... a Rob Lowe look alike! Despite her humiliation she presses forward like a soldier! Through her visits to the gym she forms friendships and a kind of second family and we start to see a small awakening for Lily as she begins to build confidence in herself. Eventually she ends up joining in on a weekend of walks in the Peak District with a group of individuals to raise money for a good cause. During this trip she realizes that she is falling for James. Insert steamy love affair... :)
I am not usually a fan of books or characters that cheat on their spouses. But, in this particular story I was rooting for Lily to find the courage to get out of this abusive and loveless marriage. James was exactly the medicine she needed to start the process of re-discovering herself, her need for passion, and realizing that she doesn't have to just accept her fate as an invisible spouse. This relationship with James gives her courage to finally make that difficult step to ending her marriage. And, I was proud of her for making this decision not because of James but because she knew it was time.
Just when you think that Lily has it all figured out and we're going to have a nice tidy little Happily Ever After ending... events occurred at the end that both surprised and shocked me... and, yes I am itching to find out just where the author will take us in book two. James was keeping a big secret and Greg ends up getting the last word. But, Lily is still hanging on to hope...
What goes around comes around is a great title for this book. It is very much about Karma and my only hope is that karma will come knocking on Greg's door in book two!

Introduction: Finding My Cents of Style

Some people are born with money. Some are born with style. A very lucky few are born with both. And then there are those who inherit neither. I fall into the last category. To help you understand where I’m coming from instead of diving right in and preaching about what you should and shouldn’t wear and how you should spend your money, I’m going to share with you a condensed version of my last thirty years in the hope that it will reveal a little about who I am and in turn help you to trust me enough to put your fashion life in my hands. I’d love the opportunity to show you how to find your style without compromising who you are, or worse, the entire contents of your savings account.

I was born in 1980 in Fort Worth, Texas—not exactly the fashion capital of the world, but I’m living proof that where you’re from doesn’t determine where you’re going! To say that my family was of moderate means is a huge understatement. Both of my parents worked tirelessly to provide for our family, so during my early years, my aunt Blanca took care of me while my mother and father were at work.

My aunt is an incredibly talented seamstress who, to this day, still finds time to make her own clothes. She was the one who taught me how to needlepoint and how to sew a garment from a pattern. We would ride the bus to our local fabric store and spend hours looking through patterns together. I thought the women on the packets looked so stylish and chic, but at that time I didn’t know anyone that actually looked like them. I always left the store wondering if there were women out there who really dressed like that. The models were tall, beautiful, and glamorous—when I grew up I wanted to dress like them (particularly the ones on the Vogue patterns), and even more, I wanted to be like them. I would daydream about the life they had, what they did, and of course, what their closets looked like. Little did I know, I’d soon have to learn how to navigate their world.

My parents wanted the best education for my brother and me, and where I lived, that meant private school. My mom found a school that likely cost as much as her yearly salary, and though my parents couldn’t afford the tuition, that didn’t stop them. My mom is incredibly tenacious, and she was willing to make whatever sacrifices were necessary to get me there. I enrolled at Fort Worth Country Day School in 1988 with generous help from the school’s financial aid program, and before the school year even started, I realized I was in for a total culture shock.

We were required to wear uniforms at Country Day, and the school administrators sent us to their preferred vendor in an upscale neighborhood that my family wasn’t too familiar with. When we got to the store, the parking lot was full of shiny BMWs and Mercedes. My mom and I were instantly intimidated.

Looking back on it, I’m sure she was thinking, Who cares where we buy her poly-blend school uniform? How much could it really cost? What she didn’t know was that the uniform cost was justthe beginning. The sales associate quickly informed us thatall the girls at school monogrammed their uniforms, andbeing the new girl and all, I wouldn’t want to feel left out.Well, duh, who wants to be the un-monogrammed new girl? She then told us that while they offered regular white and blue oxford shirts to go with the uniform, most girls opted instead for a classic Polo Ralph Lauren oxford. Of course they did!

Next we got to the shoes. School dress code dictated that they had to be leather, so my mom and I picked out classic black-and-white saddle shoes that looked perfect. I had never owned a pair like that, and even at a young age, shoes got me really excited. Cue the bubble-bursting salesperson, who explained that part of the back-to-school shopping ritual for most students was getting a new pair of Cole Haans for the year. She escorted us to a fancy armoire where they housed the shoes and showed us the latest collection. At the time, neither my mom nor I even knew shoes came in collections! But the second I got to the armoire, my heart started to race. The shoes were beautiful—some had tassels, some had intricately woven leather, and others were classically chic loafers. I can still remember the way the leather smelled, and I immediately started dreaming of how cute I would look in my preppy uniform and my gorgeous new designer shoes. Then, for the first time—but certainly not the last—I heard my mom utter these four words: “We can’t afford it.”

Up until that day, I had never really wanted for anything. We had a comfortable house. I had plenty of toys, clothes, friends, family, and everything else a little girl could want. In our social circle (which, as with most Latino families, includes only relatives) my family was considered well-off, but I suddenly came to the shocking realization that to the rest of the world, we weren’t.

I didn’t get the Polo shirts or the Cole Haan shoes that day, but my mom did splurge on the monogram, saying it would show off my personality and style. She promised we would take a trip to a local outlet to search for the designer items on sale. My mom wanted me to have all those nice things, but she’s no sucker; there was no way she was going to pay full price.

Like mother, like daughter.

That day was just the first of many times when I would be reminded that my family couldn’t afford what the kids I went to school with could. They shopped at Neiman Marcus, and we shopped at Sears. They bought new dresses for bar mitzvahs, and I had my aunt make mine. They spent thousands of dollars for new cheerleading uniforms without blinking, and my mom had to save for months to cover the cost of my new uniform each year.

During my time at Country Day, there were plenty of days when I felt different, but I quickly discovered that relationships and friendships, like style, have nothing to do with money. While my friends’ parents could afford everything we drooled over in Elle, as teenagers with a weekly allowance, we certainly couldn’t. My friends enlisted my help to show them how to get the look for less at our local mall, and by middle school I was already becoming quite the frugal fashionista!

In the end, sending me to private school was the best decision my family ever made. It opened my eyes to a new world and made me hungry for bigger and better experiences. It gave me the confidence and courage to take on new adventures, and along the way, I learned valuable lessons about money and budgeting—all of which helped shape who I am today.

Great advice for the sophisticated woman on a budget!

I am so happy that I bought this book. It's so well written and includes actual real life tips for extending your existing wardrobe and developing an eye for creativity when trying to enhance your sense of style. I can honestly say that I'm looking at my closet of clothes so differently now and pairing up certain pieces that I never thought of coordinating before. She also gives you several unique websites...most of which I had never even heard of...that has opened up an entire new world of cheap chic shopping for me. This is not a dumbed down "fluff" style book...this is a sophisticated, real-life guide for women ready to apply real tools to develop their style. I'm going to buy even more copies for holiday gifts this year!

All the style advice you need in one place - TIMELESS ADVICE!

I was looking for a book to help me both whittle down a kind of eclectic wardrobe, and to build up a collection of trend-proof basics. This book is well-written, clear, and fun to read! I am about 3/4 way through, and definitely feel that I got my money's worth. Lilliana Vazquez shows you:

-What pieces to spend more on, and where to save your money
-How to figure out your style
-Where to find inspiration
-A handy list of trend-proof must have basics
-Places where you can get a bang for your buck
-How to tell if an item is quality

She also gives you exercises on collecting fashion inspiration, which I had a blast doing on a popular free web-based pinboard site (ends in "-interest"). And although I love blogs and websites, this book is great because all the information on looking great for not much is in one easily searchable place. By far, this is one of the best books on style that I've read, and the information in it is really trend-proof. BRAVO!

My, where to begin, this book arrived quickly, was just as described by the seller, and I am in love with this book, this book is so informative and fun to read, the writer has a great easy and flowing writing style, and I am loving this book, it arrived quickly, was packaged great for shipping and I love this book, anyone wanting to "find" a helpful, fun, and great book to help develop their own personal style should get this one, of all the books that I have gotten to help me get organized and help my to feel and look better about myself, this is the one that I am really enjoying and more importantly, can relate to. I would recommend this book to everyone it is a great book and has so many helpful hints and and ideas, it is a great book and rates an A++++

About the Author
Patrick Weekes was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Stanford University, where he received a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature.

In 2005, Patrick joined BioWare's writing team in Alberta, Canada. Since then, he’s worked on all three games in the Mass Effect trilogy, where he helped write characters like Mordin, Tali, and Samantha Traynor. He is now working with the Dragon Age team on the third game in the critically acclaimed series, and he has written tie-in fiction for both series, including Tali’s issue in the Dark Horse “Mass Effect: Homeworlds” series and Dragon Age: Masked Empire, an upcoming novel to be released in July 2014.

Patrick lives in Edmonton with his wife Karin, his two Lego-and-video-game-obsessed sons, and (currently) nine rescued animals. In his spare time, he takes on unrealistic Lego-building projects, practices Kenpo Karate, and embarrasses himself in video games.

Fun, witty fantasy in the tradition of Pratchett

The Palace Job is one of those rare works that relies on cliché elements of fantasy to break with convention. Everything you know about the witty rogue, the nature spirit or the death cleric will be subtly undermined, but done so with a loving irreverence. It's Ocean's Eleven with a Unicorn, and if that doesn't do anything for you, you may have no soul.

As a character-driven heist caper, it's a delightful read. As an exercise in character voice and banter, it's a master class. Thoroughly recommended.

Couldn't put it down...

This book is a must! You must buy it today and you must read it as soon as you can. :) With amazing world-building, fantastic characters and a nail-biting story, what's not to like?

When I first started reading it I had no idea how immersed I was until I looked at the page number to discover I was already at page 140! The characters truly come to life before you and their banter is hilarious. If you like funny antics and sly one-liners, this is the book for you. Relationships between the characters evolve along the plot, making them believable and honest in this beautiful fantasy world.

Overall, the story was exciting, well-paced and impossible to put down. This book was the escape I needed at a very rough time, so for that I am grateful to the author.

I loved every moment in this novel and I can't recommend it enough!

A rip-roaring good read

I normally start a review with a small plot summary, but so much happened in this novel, my plot summary would not be small. Long story short, Loch and her... I want to call it a ragtag band; her collection of accomplices feel thrown together by circumstances and they are, really. So, Loch and her band set out to steal something, and they do. But a lot of stuff happens along the way. For the long story, you'll have to read the novel. But, as a review isn't much of a review without some impressions, here are some clues as to what you'll find along the way.

There is a death priestess. She used to be a love priestess, but things change. She has a talking hammer who used to be a king. (Things change, eh?) The hammer is a member of this band; it talks, it is assigned a share of the proceeds. So is the sixteen year old virgin with the incomparable name `Dairy'. I loved Dairy. I cheered when they took him along and made him a part of the crew. I just had a feeling he'd be important--and he was cute. They have a magician who can spin illusions, a safe cracker and her extremely athletic, talented and lethal sidekick, a unicorn (yes, a unicorn) and Loch's faithful comrade in arms, Kail.

These are the good guys. Then there are the accomplices and if I start listing the villains, we'll be here all day. There's a lot going on, but the beauty of this novel is I didn't get lost once. We've all read long and complicated books with a horde of characters and several intertwined plots where we have to flip back a page or a chapter to refresh our memory of who is who and what on earth is going on, right? Patrick Weekes tosses nine balls in the air (this ragtag band) and keeps them spinning while adding plates and dancing a jig. It's an impressive feat and makes for a rip-roaring good read.

Loch recruits her band after escaping from prison. On her trail are the prison Warden, who will not be made a fool of (but who is, repeatedly), a justicar, who is justice, and the woman responsible for putting her in prison. Several other parties are interested in Loch, including the man responsible for all the evil, the Archvoyant who killed her family and stole the treasure she wants to steal back. This would be enough to carry a novel, but The Palace Job also includes politics and themes: family, redemption, love. Good versus Evil.

Loch is always one step ahead of her cohorts and enemies, a fact I failed to recognise over and over, meaning I perched on the edge of several seats, knuckles white, wondering how she would extract herself and her companions from this mess. Despite the fantastic setting of the novel, however--a world where the palaces cling to an island suspended in the sky on crystals powered by the sun--the plots and foils all seemed plausible. From my perspective, anyway.

The book is also funny, which comes as no surprise. Patrick Weekes is a writer for BioWare's Mass Effect games which include a grim and gritty storyline underscored with humour, dark and light, and incredible humanity. So, the fact his characters in The Palace Job all feel very real is no surprise, either. Finally, the intertwined plots and separate quests, the reasons this ragtag band clicks together seamlessly, despite the fact it shouldn't, work. No thread is forgotten and no storyline is left untended, meaning the conclusion is satisfying for all involved.

The Palace Job is a remarkable first novel. I look forward to reading more from Patrick Weekes.

About the Author
Mark P. Zanna is a retired University Professor and former Chair of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. He received his BA (‘66) and PhD (‘70) from Yale University.
Professor Zanna’s area of research is the psychology of attitudes. Primarily funded over the years by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, he has studied attitude structure and function, attitude formation and change, communication and persuasion (including the persistence of persuasion), and the attitude-behaviour relation. He has also conducted research on (a) overcoming resistance to persuasion, including research on subliminal priming and persuasion, self-affirmation and persuasion, and narrative persuasion, and (b) implicit attitudes (i.e., relatively automatic, intuitive evaluations), including research on aversive racists (i.e., those individuals who test low on thoughtful, conscious measures of prejudice, but high on more automatic, intuitive measures of prejudice) and defensive self-esteem (i.e., those individuals who test high on thoughtful, conscious measures of self-esteem, but low on more automatic, intuitive measures of self-esteem). In the domain of health promotion, he has evaluated a ‘safer sex’ intervention and tested the subtle effects (e.g., on implicit norms) of movie stars’ smoking in feature films. Currently, he is investigating the causes and consequences of negative implicit norms toward females in STEM disciplines.
A winner of several career awards for distinguished scientific contribution (D. O. Hebb Award, Canadian Psychological Association, 1993; D. T. Campbell Award, Society of Personality and Social Psychology, 1997; Fellow, Royal Society of Canada, 1999; Inaugural Excellence in Research Award, UW, 2000; Inaugural Distinguished University Professor, UW, 2004; Inaugural Excellence in Graduate Supervision, UW, 2005; Distinguished Scientist Award, Society of Experimental Social Psychology, 2007; K. Lewin Award, Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, 2010; Killam Prize Laureate, Canada Council for the Arts, 2011), Professor Zanna has been a consulting editor of the top four journals in social/personality psychology (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and Journal of Personality) plus 7 other journals. Currently, he co-edits the Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology (since 1981) and the Advances in Experimental Social Psychology (since 1991), the two major edited book series in social psychology. He has also been elected to the presidencies of the two major learned societies in social psychology, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (1985) and the Society of Personality and Social Psychology (1997). 32 (of 34) of Professor Zanna’s doctoral or postdoctoral students have taken academic positions. Six students chaired their respective departments (plus one was the President of a small US college) and 12 others became editors (or consulting editors) of major journals in the field. According to the Web of Science, Professor Zanna’s lifetime citations now (February, 2014) exceed 9,500 (h = 50; H = 55). According to Google Scholar, lifetime citations now (February, 2014) exceed 21,200 (h = 74). Finally, Professor Zanna has ranked 12th and 20th worldwide in citations in social psychology textbooks and social psychology handbooks, respectively.

Dr. James Olson obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo and has been a faculty member at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, since 1978. He served as Chair of the Psychology Department from 1998 to 2003. He has conducted research on many topics, including attitudes, justice, social cognition, and humor. He has published more than 100 articles and chapters and has co-edited 15 books. He is a co-organizer of the Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology, a well-known series of conferences on various topics in personality and social psychology. He has served as an Associate Editor of three scientific journals, including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology from 1995 to 1998. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

About the Author
Richard Wilk is chair of the anthropology department at Indiana University and past president of the Society for Economic Anthropology. He hwas conducted most of his fieldwork in Belize and the United States. His publications included:The Environment in Anthropology (with Nora Haenn, 2001 New York University Press);Economies and Cultures: Foundations of Economic Anthropology (1996 Westview Press). With Josiah Heyman, he is co-editor of the AltaMira Series in Globalization and the Environment.

For the Anthropologist Foodie

I'm reading this for a college class and it hasn't reduced me to absolute boredom yet. It's a pretty enlightening compilation of essays on different aspects of the global food market, different cultures and how they are affected by it, and some of the important details surrounding our problematic current state. I think if anyone gave it a chance, they'd get something out of it - but I know, if not for this class, I would not have ever picked this up. In any case, I'm glad I did.

Bought this book for a Food Anthropology class. Some of the articles in it are very interesting; others lacking. Definitely geared toward academic circles - it is not a work of popular non-fiction.
