Yoga for Emotional Trauma: Meditations and Practices for Healing Pain and Suffering
By Tamara Pittman Breckinridge
Yoga for Emotional Trauma
by Mary NurrieStearns
and Rick NurrieStearns
The renowned Lebanese-American poet and artist, Khalil Gibran wrote:
"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."
How we perceive and react to traumatic life events varies greatly from one person to another. When reactions to such an event cause suffering that affects our health, relationships and overall happiness we seek guidance outside of ourselves. In their new book, Yoga for Emotional Trauma: Meditations and Practices for Healing Pain and Suffering, Mary and Rick NurrieStearns explore the nature of trauma, compare the different types of trauma and its effects on the body, and teach us that we can learn to lessen the psychological and physical pain of our trauma induced illnesses by using simple yoga techniques. They explain how traumas imprint themselves on our muscles and central nervous system, where they can cause personality and behavioral problems. Using specific examples, the authors explain how yoga practices such as intentional breathing, meditation and physical yoga poses can help bring balance back into an imbalanced life. Emphasis is also placed on different ways of focusing attention, and how focusing awareness on everyday activities such as eating and walking can help heal trauma. In addition, this book illustrates how the repetitive use of affirmative mantras can help change negative and destructive thought patterns. Finally, techniques to deal with emotional/physical pain and sleep disruption are discussed in detail.
This holistic approach to dealing with trauma does not lend greater emphasis to physical poses, but instead integrates several aspects of yoga that are equally, if not more vital to healing. The Nurriestearns have included many personal anecdotes that help the reader relate to their teachings and understand the concepts that are presented. Their book is dense with helpful information, and includes a wonderful bibliography for the reader who wants to investigate further.
This is a quote from p.61: "Knowing a little about what trauma does to your brain, then later reading about what yoga does to your brain, helps you to understand how yoga heals trauma."
Yoga for Emotional Trauma is a well researched, wonderful book! It's tender, thoughtful, wise and inspirational. I was impressed.

Yoga for Emotional Trauma - a very helpful book.
By Kindle Customer
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in hopes of a review, I have no relationship with the publisher nor am I trying to get anything published with them. That said I really liked the book. As a yoga teacher and studio owner I am always looking for books to use in my teaching and to recommend to students. So often students tell me of trauma and pain they have experienced - that often comes up in their minds after yoga class. It's great to have such a beautifully written book, with specific practices that I can recommend to my students to help them in their journey. One of the things I like about this book in comparison to other yoga books on emotional healing is its clear structure and basic information without too much personal trauma history of the authors. The NurrieStearns have created a wonderful resource for yoga teachers, yoga trainers, and mental health professionals. Yoga worked for them, and they want to help others discover it too.

By Spirit Connector
I wanted a book that dealt more with the realities of PTSD. This book at times makes it seem like dealing with (complex) trauma or PTSD is easily "fixable" with yoga - it is not. It is one tool that can help in conjunction with a really great therapist. It takes A LOT more work than what this books sometimes gives the illusion of.
