Backed by a massive publicity push, USA Weekend relationship columnist Hughes is out to fill what she claims is everyone’s goal: "to be part of a couple, to be loved and be in love." Her book on becoming "dateworthy" is aimed at women who have a history of dating losers. She advises them to figure out their dating type (Time Bomb, Drama Queen, Shadow, etc.), change their dating style and master a few skills to deal with the ways of men before embarking on their next date. Hughes’s style is not for those in a hurry. She’s big on paperwork, encouraging readers to "make a list of ten visual qualities that you love in order of preference" and to "write down every relationship that you feel violated your faith in love or undermined your confidence." Yet the book manages to belittle women ("you are the common denominator in all of your failed relationships") and stereotype men ("Men are visual. Dress prettily, not provocatively") without saying much of anything new. Fans of Cosmo and Glamour will like Hughes’s familiar style, which is heavy on lists, quizzes and Q&As. Hughes also shares dozens of stories that she says are based on her own dating past. Less empowering than The Rules and more than a little repetitive, this volume will sell well, nevertheless, since Hughes’s column reaches millions of people and many of them may want to check it out.

Using a hip and humorous approach, Hughes includes suggestions for rethinking unhealthy mindsets, improving one's dateworthiness, and evaluating potential partners' dateworthiness; she also cautions women about sex on the first date and putting friendship second. This book is a must for those ready for a change!

As a happily married woman, I chose this book not for myself but for my sister who has re-entered the dating arena...I like Dennie's style in her weekly column so I figured my sister would feel comfortable with Dateworthy. I ended up reading the book before I saw my sister and to say I was impressed is an understatement.

As a professional with degrees (BA, M.Ed., Ed.S.) in various fields of human relations and education, it is refreshing to see an author that doesn't bash either sex, try to manipulate men (remember The Rules?), advocates NOT jumping into the sack in the beginning of a relationship, and (the most refreshing part of all)leads the reader to realize that while no person is meant to be a partner with all people, if there is a consistant problem with relationships in a woman's life, perhaps she should look within herself and honestly evaluate what she is about. Dennie does a beautiful and gentle job of leading the reader through a series of thought provoking questions and quizes which, when answered thoughtfully and honestly, can open a new chapter of self-realization for the reader. It is at this point the reader can determine what she is truly looking for in a date/mate and unlike some popular books, (like He's Just Not That Into You) Dennie gives over 300 pages of good, solid, safe advice for any dater on what to do while in the dating arena during the 21st century.

Dating can be fun and very funny...just read some of Dennie's personal anecdotes which are liberally scattered throughout the book. But Dennie also offers a solid dose of reality with the unstated message of

Dateworthy is worth reading

I loved this book and I loved that Ms. Hughes didn't just write about this from an analyst side-line point of view. She was really in those dating trenches and all the advice works from a real life perspective. The quizzes make you think. The relationtips alone are worth the price of the book. And the dating stories were must-see-TV worthy. With all the post-it notes I have stuck in it, it has literally become my constant dating reference book. Buy this book and be prepared to share it with your friends.

Guy's Point of View

I know this book is geared toward girls more but there are even many points in this book that can be for guys as well. For example, some of us can be classified as "The Rescuers", finding relationship with a girl who's like a lost puppy or "The First Sighter" where some of us guys think we can't be attracted to a girl if we can't feel the chemistry instantly. Just as girls can be "Dateworthy", guys can be too. What better way to have success with girls than to understand how girls think.

Christopher Kuner is Senior Of Counsel in the Brussels office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for European Legal Studies, University of Cambridge, where he also teaches. He is Chairman of the Task Force on Privacy and Data Protection of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and participates in the work of international organizations such as the OECD, the Council of Europe, and UNCITRAL. Mr. Kuner is author of the book European Data Protection Law: Corporate Compliance and Regulation and is editor-in-chief of the journal International Data Privacy Law (both published by Oxford University Press).

Christopher Kuner’s fascinating work on transborder data flows and data privacy law is an absolute must-read for anybody interested in the challenges of data protection, internet regulation, and legal pluralism in the twenty-first century more generally. The book is organized into eight well-structured and easily accessible chapters: Background and Introduction; International Regulation of Transborder Data Flows; Typology of Regulatory Approaches; National, Private Sector, and Technological Approaches; Analysis of Underlying Policies; Applicable Law, Extraterritoriality, and Transborder Data Flows; Compliance and Enforcement; A Global Regulatory Framework for Transborder Data Flows; as well as a comprehensive appendix of data protection and privacy law instruments currently regulating transborder data flows around the world. Since the book was only published in 2013, it is one of the most up-to-date scholarly assessments of the current state and possible future of the increasingly important issue of global transborder data flow regulation. The book is equally useful for data protection professionals as well as novices in the field. Christopher Kuner writes in a clear and comprehensible manner that makes the book not only an interesting but also thoroughly enjoyable read. As one might expect from Kuner’s background, the book is as useful and practical as it is deep and thought-provoking. It recognizes that as much as data protection is considered to be a field of market regulation, it also impacts fundamental, indeed philosophical, dilemmas in human rights law, globalization and our response to the shape-shifting chimera of the Internet. It is a foray into private international law, where Kuner explores the challenges and practical intricacies of national regulation in a globalized environment. As Peter Hustinx writes in the book’s foreword, it is “an inconvenient truth that national borders still play a key role in legal regulations, although data flows may cross those same borders a million times every second.”

About the Author

Kamal I.M. Al-Malah, Ph.D., is head of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Ha’il in Saudi Arabia. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical/biochemical engineering. Dr. Al-Malah graduated from Oregon State University in 1993, and his area of specialty during his M.S. and Ph.D. programs dealt with protein interactions and behavior at interfaces in biological systems. He currently researches in the realm of chemical and biochemical engineering and food engineering. Additionally, Dr. Al-Malah is a software developer and has created Windows-based software for engineering applications and modeling of physical/biophysical systems.

Amazing

I immensely gained from reading this book. This book is the true story of a Christian woman who "thought" she knew what Christianity was all about - mostly by being helpful and in control and people-pleasing, and looking and acting a certain part. I know this to be true of so many people (especially the "in control" and the "looking and acting a certain part"). She, like so many people, thought Christians had perfect lifes and nothing ever went wrong. I especially agree with her (on page 24) where she says: ". . . valuable lessons I could not have learned by staying on the high road where the sun always shines".

Another one of her quotes that I was really thankful to read is on page 198: ". . . lie out there (that the church sometimes supports) that we are to look and act a certain way". That really hit home for me because of something I had been through.

She is open and honest in this book. We realize that true Christians (and people trying to become such) are just like anybody else. They don't have any special "grace" to make them be "perfect" and "unbroken".

I would recommend this book to anyone. Whether you're going through a rough time, or have unresolved or unanswered anger or issues, or wondering why your life isn't perfect, or wondering why you have to put on a front to make it appear that your life is perfect, or just if you are or want to be a Christian - and that covers everyone who would be interested.

There's so much I could say about this wonderful book, but I don't want to say much more, because I want people to be able to read this book without me giving anything away. But to sum it up, I will say that after she gave up her control, and let God be in control, she found joy.

Great ! Wonderful insight and struggling ! A must-read !

Jan is a tremendous inspiration to all women struggling with control issues but are not admitting it to themselves or others. Her insights into how being in control controlled her life is truly a gift from God. Ms Dravecky pulls from the bottom of her heart strings in order to share her life's struggles and triumphs. I read this book last summer after having lost the job of my dreams on short notice and without prospects of another one. Feeling her pain and rejoicing in her ability to get to the other side because of her strong spiritual beliefs enabled me to gain strength in my own battle. Being in control is not always in our best interest is the lesson here, as difficult as that may seem to most women in that position. A great book !

Brooklyn Noir (2004)^B featured originals, but here, McLoughlin mines reprints, allowing him to pay tribute to "all the great stories that had given me the idea for such a book in the first place." These 13 Brooklyn-centric stories are slotted into the volume 1 categories ("Old School," "New School," "Cops and Robbers," and "Backwater Brooklyn") but with authors as wildly diverse as H. P. Lovecraft, Hubert Selby Jr., Donald E. Westlake, and Jonathan Lethem. (Pete Hamill and Maggie Estep make return appearances.) It's certainly possible to argue whether Lethem and Estep belong in a volume of "classics," or even whether the book is appropriately named (continuing the devaluation of the word noir, here it's a generic "dark fiction"). But, though stylistically scattershot, this is good stuff, from Lovecraft's baroque "The Horror at Red Hook" to Selby's "Tralala" (one of the stories in Last Exit to Brooklyn) to "By the Dawn's Early Light," a great Matt Scudder story by Lawrence Block. Dear, dirty Brooklyn

Superior to Manhattan Noir and Bklyn Noir 1. Ranges from the elegant (and enraged) H. P. Lovecraft (originally from Rhode Island, so what can you expect?) to Selby's dreamy, slick brutalities (a prose style halfway between Henry Miller's and William Burroughs's). Brooklyn (being Brooklyn) allows for the fine-tuning of realism in the canon of American prose styles. Wolfe's attempt to reproduce Brooklyn speech fails pitifully (just as do Hollywood's attempts to suggest Southern speech), but Selby's waterfront Brooklyn of WW 2 succeeds (see the German film production of LAST EXIT: is that Jennifer Jason Leigh as the perky, scrofulous siren of the Bklyn waterfront?). Unfortunately, Flatbush is totally absent (as it is in Bklyn Noir 1). During WW 1, Flatbush was the epitome of middle-class American aspirations ("When it's nesting time in Flatbush..."). Miller's Death of a Salesman comes out of Flatbush, as do portions of Malamud and Edmund Wilson ("Princess with the Golden Hair"). And don't forget Woody Allen. Somehow, both vols of Bklyn Noir omit this fertile enclave. Essential reading for students of American literature.

Brooklyn Noir 2: the Classics

Interesting concept...a follow-up to the excellent Brooklyn Noir 1 with a collection of "classic" short stories ranging in tone from H.P. Lovecraft's stately "Horror at Red Hook" to Hubert Selby's torrid "Talala"

(an excerpt from "Last Exit to Brooklyn"). Something here to please everyone, but not everything to everyone's taste. Not quite as entertaining as the original BN1 but the stories are well chosen and varied in style, a worthy addition to the Noir collections.

Brooklyn Noir is a special series

I have read all three Noirs in the series and I credit the editor, Tim McLoughlin, for doing a bang up job of finding compelling material. His own short story in Vol. 1 is one of my faves. Reviews say that these books are somewhat uneven and I would have to agree, but, come on, let's be realisitc. After all, these are short stories and take 10 minutes to read so, even if you don't think one or two are up to snuff, it's still an overall good read.

Rebecca M. Warner received a B.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University in Social Relations in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard in 1978. She has taught statistics for more than 25 years: from Introductory and Intermediate Statistics to advanced topics seminars in Multivariate Statistics, Structural Equation Modeling, and Time Series Analysis. She is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Hampshire. She is a Fellow in the Association for Psychological Science and a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Association for Relationships Research, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She has consulted on statistics and data management for the World Health Organization in Geneva and served as a visiting faculty member at Shandong Medical University in China.

I am a research specialist for an online graduate school and we are in the process of adopting this book for our students. It really is the most comprehensive, user-friendly text on the market. Actually, this book is extremely helpful for graduate students as well as those of us who have already graduated :-) I think statistics is similar to a foreign language: use it or lose it. Of course I'll probably always remember "donde esta el bano?", just like I remember t-tests, correlations, ANOVA, regression, etc. However, the water can get murky when it comes to power analyses in certain situations, moderation/mediation, differences between discriminant analysis and binary logistic regression, and other complicated or less used tests. Warner's text is an excellent, user-friendly resource in such situations as well as when my doctoral students have random questions about their analyses. She provides relatable examples, professional write-ups, and helpful SPSS screenshots. I would highly recommend this text!

A useful overview

Cloudflare Instant Starter is a short introduction to the Cloudflare content delivery network. Never having used a CDN before, beyond those provided by Google and jQuery, I was curious to see what the buzz around Cloudflare was, and this book provides a great overview, managing to be short and easy to understand, yet also cover the service in a reasonable depth.

The book begins with a simple overview of the terminology involved and what a CDN is. Not being familiar with service like Cloudflare this was useful, although as a reasonably technical reader I found the section on the basics of IPs and DNS rather unnecessary. However the author goes on to explain the differences between Cloudflare and "traditional" CDNs, and I was impressed by how much the service is able to do. I don't want to turn this review into a review of Cloudflare, so I won't go into the features, but suffice to say the author does an excellent job of describing the (many) options available, and clearing up exactly what each one does and when a site owner would see the benefit of them.

I found the tone engaging and helpful, and although the book may seem somewhat pricey for only 50 pages of material, the level of detail is pitched higher than you might expect, and much more helpful than most 50 page books. The author manages to get in a lot of information and useful instruction without waffling or dwelling for too long on any one topic.
