Toyland was once a place of wonder and beauty, at least until the teddy
dictator Roxbury took over. After Matthew's brother and playmate, Alex,
disappears, Matthew finds himself carried into Toyland by his own loyal
toy soldiers. Matthew soon learns that Alex has been here, too -- and is
now being held captive by Roxbury. Leading an attack on the teddy
bear's fortress, Matthew never considers that his brother might be beyond
saving.

Toy Story gone astray
By Kim Heimbuch
This is one of the best non-Japanese graphic novels I have read in a long time and is appropriate for all ages as there is no actual violence and it has a really strong story line that speaks of strength, loyalty, and doing what you know is right in spite of what others try to force upon you or what society might expect from you. It also speaks highly that being scared is okay and doesn’t show weakness. With people who believe in you standing behind you, you can overcome any hardships.
“The toys fought with all they had, but the Jacks had surprise on their side.”
The artist starts the story out in black and white and with a turn of the page, you see the black and white and the dark contrasting color combine from two pages to unite the same picture and to really unfold this darkly twisted spin of Toy Story meets Tim Burton; every kid’s wildest dream to have their toys come to life and the chance to be a super hero in some sense. Matthew is a young boy who spends hours on end playing with the toys in his brothers toy box. Plastic army men, tanks, planes, books, stuffed animals, you name it, Alex had everything and anything a kid would love. When Matthew is sucked into the toy box, he is faced with a dreary war-torn altered world where he isn’t sure he belongs. Could this be where his brother has been lost too and will he find him? Definitely pick this one up and find out the answer for yourself!

Toy Story with a too dark edge
By Wayne A McCoy
In the opening pages on Wars In Toyland, we learn that Matthew and his brother Alex like to stage wars with their toys, lining them up in rows. We also learn that Alex has gone missing. Matthew finds himself in a battle against evil toys to save his brother Alex. The leader of the evil toys is a tattered and unloved teddy bear named Roxbury.
This is a graphic novel in the form of a story book, with images crossing over landscape pages. The art by Pollina, McCarthy and Woodard is vibrant and colorful. The lettering is some of the best I've seen in a while, but I had issues with the story and some of the imagery.
I loved The Great Pacific: Trashed, by Joe Harris, so perhaps I'm confused about who the audience is intended to be. It seems like it's supposed to be a children's story, but it's thematically quite dark. A missing sibling, some nightmarish toys and the reality of war all can be dealt with for children, but in this book, it's spun up too harsh. Sacrifices are made, but don't seem to have weight, or room for Matthew to understand or deal with them. It's all ultimately wrapped up neatly, but never fully explained so that I could understand (much less a child reading it). With this theme, I very much wanted to like this book more.

Toystory-ish but Creepier and Scary
By Nicola Mansfield
This has a "Toy Story" feel to it, mind you more intense and not a little kiddies story. Yet still it had that vibe. A difference is that the toys come alive in their owner's presence to help him. Matthew's brother is a missing person and the toys know where he is, so they take him to Toyland where Alex has been kidnapped and taken over to the dark side. It's a brief story that I just couldn't 100% get into; it rather predictably went where I expected it would. A pleasant diversion but nothing special. I was enamoured by the artwork though. Especially the scenes that have the wooden toy soldiers all lined up to do battle. The artwork enhances and elevates the story, imho. A bit scary and creepy so I'm keeping the recommended age for upper MG+ but some younger, who don't scare easy, will be fine with it.
