About the Author

Steve Waxman exemplifies the bridge between basic research and clinical medicine. He is the Bridget Marie Flaherty Professor of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Pharmacology at Yale University. He served as Chairman of Neurology at Yale from 1986 until 2009. He founded the Neuroscience and Regeneration Research Center at Yale in 1986, and is its Director. Dr. Waxman is also Visiting Professor at University College London and the Institute of Neurology, London.

Wonderful style and suspense till the end!

Once again Jim Grimsley has a way of grasping your attention to a story making you read as fast as you can. These plays are wonderful and really stay with you as you wonder why characters did certain things. Especially after I finished reading Mr. Universe, I still had so many unanswered questions. I got so pulled into the story that I could imagine the muscle man standing there in front of me.
Jim Grimsley has a wonderful talent as an author and regardless of your background all of his books are wonderful!! His writing style is fantastic and his books are never predictable. He has a way of describing things in such detail that while you are reading one of his books you actually think you hear the characters talking out the words. Keep up the great writing and I will be looking for the next book of yours soon!

how to solve any quintic equation in a large number of difficult steps

I purchased this book as a follow-on to John Howie's "Fields and Galois Theory", in which at the end of the tenth chapter, after proving that there is no general solution by radicals of the general quintic equation, he states that the general solution of the quintic equation can be expressed in terms of elliptic modular functions. These are functions of the upper half-complex plane which are doubly periodic and obey certain transformation laws. The tenth chapter of "Elliptic Functions" covers this very nicely. However, I "cheated" in that I first read various entries in Wikipedia on the elliptic modular functions and related topics, in order to get a concise overview of the topic. I don't think I would have been able to achieve such a clear overview using this book, because I would probably have lost sight of the forest for the trees, or perhaps more aptly, for slogging through the dense underbrush, sweat burning my eyes.

In any event, my original plan was to go through the entire book in sequence, but after spending several weeks just going through the first two chapters, I decided to skip straight to chapter ten, which covers the general solution of the quintic. The first two chapters give an introduction to how elliptic functions were first discovered (by Niels Abel) as inversions of elliptic integrals, and how they might have been further developed along these lines, rather than as they were actually further developed, namely as theta functions by Jacobi after Abel's early death. They're interesting but not particularly essential to the core of the topic. If you want a standard exposition of the topic without this historical detour, you can start with the third chapter.

The tenth chapter clearly expounds the use of elliptic modular functions to solve the general quintic equation. It covers two different methods for doing so, of which I only studied the first. I stand in awe of how anyone could be smart enough to have figured this out. It is reasonably straightforward and concise, with references supplied to more detailed treatments. There are some minor typos, annoying but not seriously interfering with the comprehensibility of the text. (The subject matter itself provides sufficient such interference!)

There is a lot of additional theory and application of elliptic modular functions in this book, which look fascinating but which my brain is currently unable to muster the energy to attack. Perhaps some day.

I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the theory and applications of elliptic modular functions, including the solution of the general quintic equation. The exposition is reasonably clear, there are good examples, and each chapter section is followed by exercises, the answers to which are unfortunately not provided. A background in complex analysis and linear algebra is required.

Too bad this book was not proof read correctly. It is defined as a student text: there are way too many typos, sometime more than one per page in some chapters.

It would otherwise be an excellent book; this product should be recalled by the editor.

These brief devotionals are an excellent source of encouragement and refreshment for busy moms. Guilt over not being the "perfect" mom is replaced by affirmation, weariness by renewed strength, and chaos by peace when just a few moments are spent being reminded that God loves and guides "those who are with young."

CHUCK SCHUMER was elected to the New York State Assembly at age 23―making him one of the youngest members since Theodore Roosevelt―and to Congress at age 29. In 1998 he became New York's junior senator, and he now holds the senior position. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife. They have two daughters.

A Book Every Republican Should Read

I am surprised to be recommending Senator Chuck Schumer's Positively American and yet it is a very powerful and effective book.

Schumer is a liberal and very positive Democrat but he is also very smart and has some profound insights into contemporary American thinking.

For any Republican who would like to understand what happened in 2006, the Schumer explanation is compelling and sobering. He and Rahm Emmanuel have understood that a hard left Democratic Party will never be a majority. They were prepared to recruit candidates who were electable and to accept that those candidates would infuriate their more liberal wing. They saw a center-left majority as preferable to a happy leftwing minority. It is a formidable warning about how they will run 2008 and beyond.

Furthermore, Schumer has a much better sense for middle class than I would have expected. He is thinking a lot about how to understand the needs and concerns of middle class and how to develop programs which will appeal to the middle class vote.

Schumer's reelection by 71% (a new york record) was not an accident. He has a serious, thorough understanding of how to emphasize issues and achievements which will appeal to moderate voters who would be infuriated by the left wing of the democratic party.

Finally Schumer lists 11 major areas of solutions. Republicans could easily coopt half of those solutions and challenge Senator Schumer to help pass them into law.

This is a smart book by an intelligent, liberal Democrat who is determined to turn his party into a governing majority again. It is worth study by every Republican who would like their party and their center-right philosophy to prevail.

My Honest Opinions

In the interests of full disclosure, I am solidly conservative, I voted for the president in 2004 (too young to vote in 2000), and would vote for him again if there were an election today. So now that all of that is out of the way, you can judge my review on its merits.

I thought the book was extremely well written. I don't know if Mr. Schumer employs a ghost-writer, or writes it himself, but whoever did the writing did a great job, the language was concise and flowing, and the actual text itself was easy to read.

In spite of my disagreements with the Senator, his passion and his beliefs come across strongly during the book, and at the least, conservatives must grant that this man is motivated by a genuine system of beliefs, and is not a finger in the wind politician.

I will not list my disagreements with his policy proposals, this is a book review, not a debate forum, but I had one huge structural beef with the book. There is not a single footnote in the entire book! I understand that many authors, both right and left, don't footnote properly, or at all, and I hate it when it happens. I do not think Mr. Schumer would lie to his readers, but I absolutely think that as a partisan for his party, he may distort statistics, mis-quote opponents, or spin data a certain way (not that this is a negative, I would do the same thing were I in his shoes). I am only saying that if you are going to make declarative statements, provide citation!

I gave this book 3 stars because it was a good read, but it was not the page-turner or rhetorical masterpiece that I would give 4 stars to (I would give 5 stars only to a few select books in the English language). I freely admit that my opinion may be biased by my political disagreements with Senator Schumer, but I must call a spade a spade and say this was a well-written and moving book, with stylistic flaws that made it a little less than it could have been. Worth a read for sure, no matter what your politics are...

What a fantastic book! Senator Schumer was the architect of the Democrats victory last fall, and if they listen to his blueprint in Positively American the Dems will take the White House in 2008. Kudos to Senator Schumer for talking about the middle class and how to make government work for the average American. I especially applaud his call on p.118 to have readers contribute their own message for the Democrat party on the website for his book.

Wilhelm Hauff (29. November 1802 - 18. November 1827) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Romantik. Er war ein Hauptvertreter der Schwäbischen Dichterschule.

Unter den zahlreichen Werken, die der früh verstorbene Wilhelm Hauff in seinem nur drei Jahre währenden literarischen Wirken verfasst hat, ragen die Märchenalmanache heraus. Der kleine Muck, Zwerg Nase, Kalif Storch - sie und viele andere seiner Figuren erscheinen auch heutigen Lesern als gute alte Bekannte. Die vorliegende Ausgabe bietet sämtliche Märchen, die Illustrationen der Erstdrucke und zusätzliche 10 farbige Bildtafeln.

Hauffs Märchen fallen in die spätromantische Literaturphase. Der erste Band um die Rahmenerzählung Die Karawane ist gekennzeichnet von hohem Einfühlungsvermögen in die orientalische Lebensweise. Der zweite Band um den Scheich von Alessandria und seine Sklaven verlässt den rein orientalischen Handlungsraum; Zwerg Nase und zwei von Wilhelm Grimm übernommene Märchen (»Schneeweißchen und Rosenroth« und »Das Fest der Unterirdischen«) stehen in der europäischen Märchentradition. Sein dritter Band, Das Wirtshaus im Spessart, behandelt eher Sagenstoffe als Märchen; die Schwarzwaldsage Das kalte Herz ist die bekannteste dieser Sagen.
