About the Author
Writing under the pen name Judith Arnold, Barbara Keiler is the author of eighty-six published novels. She has been a multiple finalist for RWA's Rita Award, and she's won several Reviewer's Choice Awards from "RT Book Reviews, " including awards for Best Harlequin American, Best Superromance, Best Series Romance, and, most recently Best Contemporary Romance Novel. Her novel "Love In Bloom's" was honored as one of the best books of the year by "Publishers Weekly". Her Superromance "Barefoot In The Grass" has appeared on the recommended reading lists of cancer support groups and hospitals. Her current release is "Hope Street", a single-title trade paperback from Harlequin.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Smith College, Barbara holds a master's degree in creative writing from Brown University. She has received writing fellowships from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and has taught at colleges and universities around the country.

A Beautiful Book

I can't say enough good about this book. It's beautifully written, the characters are unique and real, the storyline is both heart breaking and hopeful.
So briefly, this is the story of four young people (late teens) who experience a devastating loss. The story tracks them over the next five years as each of them deals with his or her grief in a different manner. You will cry for these characters, sometimes wanting to shake them, sometimes understanding their reactions, but always, always hoping for their recovery.
This is a book you have to read. You won't be disappointed.

One of Judith Arnold's Best Books

You've read the plot synopses in the various reviews and you're wondering if this is a downer. It is far from that, and it is not without touches of genuine humor (did you know the male equivalent of a bimbo is a bimbum? You do now, and you should start using the word so it's in the OED by 2016). Ms. Arnold has explored four very typical ways of grieving by creating four very real characters all of whom you will feel for and all of whom will teach you something about your own response to bereavement. We all need these lessons, and here they are wrapped subversively in an entertainment. Entertain yourself.

Deeply affecting

I just finished The April Tree, which was an emotionally powerful novel about young people dealing with the sudden and tragic death of a friend. Each character embarks upon his or her own individual journey, yet at the same time they are all intertwined and connected in different ways. The author explores this unthinkable tragedy through the hearts and minds of her main characters, and does so with wisdom, compassion, and honesty. It is a fascinating and dramatic look at how different personalities deal with grief, but throughout it all, we are constantly reminded of the beauty in life and the importance of appreciating what we have today, while at the same time learning how to finally let go of what cannot be changed.
The book is both heart-breaking and uplifting, and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy intelligent writing that is not afraid to deal with honest emotion. Five stars.
