But soon Mer, the Merman from Mermin, is living with Pete—and on the run from his mysterious and watery past. Mer’s confusion about human life is amusing, as are Toby’s parents’ and teacher’s reactions to Mer’s appearance. Weisner’s art is bright and modern. The action scenes and (literal) “fish out of water” story line will appeal to superhero fans in particular. Unfortunately, readers may be frustrated by the lack of answers to the many questions raised and the unresolved ending, which waters down an otherwise strong tale. Give this to Lunch Lady or Dragonbreath fans while they wait for the next installment of those series. The fish-boy and his human friends are a likable crew, so hopefully fans can spend some more time with them in future adventures. Grades 3-6. --Snow Wildsmith

Silly and engaging

Mermin is the kind of book that holds equal appeal for kids and for adults with kid-like mentalities. Mermin is a fish-boy who communicates telepathically with fish, a talent that his human friend Pete has yet to achieve. In this volume, we learn that Mermin is from a royal family and that he hopes to conceal the truth about his heritage. Meanwhile a couple of paranormal investigators are trying to capture Mermin, a task not easily accomplished (even when using a net).
The story, like the art, is silly and engaging. It isn't highbrow comedy but it's funny. Mermin is about on the level of an old Saturday morning cartoon (back when they used to be funny). An adult can read this once, chuckle a couple of times, and move on, while a kid will probably read it over and over.

Liked the Art

I wish I had liked this more than I did. The cartooning is so cute and humorous I was looking forward to it and really liked Mermin's look. His character is very compelling as well and I enjoyed him. However, the plot was full of holes and ended with nothing solved. In fact, it only left us with more questions and the obvious knowledge this is just the beginning of a story to be continued in book two. I am going to read the next book though as I'm hoping the story will get better; the art has certainly got my attention.

My son adores this series! He's a big graphic novel fan and these are perfect for him. Getting him all three for the start of school.
