Founded upon a fratricide—or at least so goes the legend of Romulus and Remus—the Eternal City would seem fertile terrain for the newest site-inspired short story anthology in Akashic's popular noir series. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Despite the stray gem like Antonio Pascale's For a Few More Gold Tokens, an ingeniously constructed, darkly comic account of a caper gone hilariously wrong, most of the 16 selections made by Stangalino, a festival organizer and film director, and British editor and writer Jakubowski display a disappointing dearth of variety or distinction. Even Jakubowski's own Remember Me with Kindness, one of the volume's most stylishly written tales, would have shone brighter without the presence of another story hinging on the same plot twist. In anybody's book, that's a crime. (Feb.)

She is now a freelance festival organiser, responsible amongst other things for the Courmayeur Noir in Festival literary events and Festarch, the Sardinian architecture festival. She has also directed a documentary film about American crime writer Joe R. Lansdale. She lives in Turin, Italy. Maxim Jakubowski is a British editor and writer. Following a long career in book publishing, during which time he was responsible for several major crime imprints, he opened London's specialist mystery bookshop Murder One. He reviews crime-fiction for The Guardian, runs London's Crime Scene Festival, and is a regular at Italian crime events.

A Disappointing Destination

I've read a lot of crime anthologies over the last ten years, and a common failing is a lack of thematic unity. Even when arranged around a particular notion, such as revenge or hitmen, they often include a number of stories that feel shoehorned in. By compiling stories based on location, Akashic's noir series totally avoids this problem, and it's a concept I really really like. I love reading crime fiction set in unfamiliar places, as I find it often evokes the social fabric of a city or country much better than a travelogue will.
That said, this particular entry in the series is a total flop. Of the sixteen stories, only two offered what felt like a glimpse of the real Rome. The reason for this is slightly buried in a few lines in the book's brief introduction, where the editors note that "few major [Italian] writers in the [crime] genre have actually been Roman or written about the place" and that "several writers were puzzled when we approached them for new stories set in [Rome]." Indeed, the biographies of the writers who contributed stories are shot through with other Italian cities such as Turin, Milan, Palermo, Bologna, Naples, Palermo, Bari, etc. -- but not Rome. When the editors write, "We gave [the writers] carte blanche, and we think the results speak for themselves," my reaction is "Yes, the results do speak for themselves, and they say 'we are uncomfortable representing Rome.'"
The lone exceptions to this are Antonio Pascale's "For a Few More Golden Tokens" and Evelino Santangelo's "Eaten Alive." They both use a handful of nicely sketched characters to spin dark little stories of gentrification and good old-fashioned greed. To be sure, the book includes some talented authors whose work I've enjoyed, such as Reasonable Doubtsand Carte Blanche, but their contributions here are awfully perfunctory (their two stories are only 4-5 pages each). There are a few stories featuring American characters that feel quite awkward, as if the authors felt that because the stories were commissioned for an American publisher, that they should feature American characters.
It's really questionable whether readers interested in Rome are really going to find much of value here. And readers more generally interested in what's going on in Italian crime fiction will be much better served by the recent anthology Crimini, whose stories are of a much higher overall quality. I'm still a big fan of Akashic's city-centric anthology, but would suggest striking this particular stop from your itinerary of world crime.

Noir novel evocative of Rome

"Even today, after two years of Roman vacations, I get lost in the center of the city as soon as I leave the perpendicular line of the Corso. For someone accustomed to the perfect symmetry of Manhattan, the twisting streets of the Italian capital seem a labyrinth of squares and narrow alleys, all the same: a fountain, a column, a flaking wall, a café, a market stall, a wild dog, a motorcycle, a beggar, a group of American or Japanese tourists, another fountain" (extract from Roman Holidays, a Rome Noir short story, by Enrico Franceschini).
Recognise Rome from this short description? The lovely indecipherable impenetrable city with a history going back two and a half thousand years; and this is just one of many descriptions that pepper the book of short stories "Rome Noir" edited by Chiara Stangalino and Maxim Jakubowski. A cocktail of 16 stories set around the capital from Stazione Termini to the Via Appia Antica, Fiumicino to the Villa Borghese. Some stories are like gossamer veils enveloping and captivating, some are downright dark, and others culminate in murderous intent. Others are visceral in their storyline, some are seamy, but there is something for everyone. Tour the city through this collection and get to know areas off the beaten tourist track and experience the stories through the eyes of its citizens.
