About the Author
Stan Gibilisco has authored or coauthored more than 50 books on physics, electronics, mathematics, and computing. He began his career as a radio-frequency design engineer, a technical writer, a magazine editor, and a wireless broadcast technician. The American Library Association named Stan’s McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing as one of the “Best References of 1996.” In addition to authoring several books in McGraw-Hill Professional’s Demystified series of home study guides, he has also written three books in the Know-It-All series for students who enjoy mathematics.

Making Everyday Electronics Work

I am a fan of Stan Gibilisco's work and own ten of his books. What I like about Stan's books is his use of first principles; he explains the science behind the technology. In the first chapter of Making Everyday Electronics Work there is a great introduction to electricity starting with how electricity is currently defined (charge movement) then moving into the different types of electricity (DC and AC). I found the AC electricity section to be particularly good. Here's an example why:
"The charge carriers (usually electrons) in alternating current (AC) don't keep moving in the same direction all the time. They reverse direction at regular intervals". What a straight forward and clear definition of AC!!!
Here's another first principle example:
"The term pixel is a contraction of the words 'picture element'. A pixel is the smallest unit of visible information in a video image". Again a very concise and clear definition of the phenomena before progressing into how pixels are used in our current technology. Want to use first principles practically? Got a new big-screen TV? Turn it on tune to a blank channel and look over the screen. The screen should "show a uniform gray" If it has either solid white or black spots it might have failed LED or LCD elements.
I loved Making Everday Electronics Work and I highly recommend it!!!! Thanks Stan!

Can't Recommend This Book

Just received this book and I can't recommend it. It is a strange amalgam of basic observations on electronics combined with some oddball home electronic experiments. The text provides some very high level descriptions of various electronics systems one might encounter in everyday life (home electronics, audio, car electronics, wireless, etc.). The "do it yourself" description of the book is a misnomer, as it really does not equip you to do anything. If warning of tangled power chords in a surge protector strip counts as a do it yourself guide, the standards for this description are pretty slim. The books lacks focus...it seems like the publisher must not have had a clear idea of the objective of the book to let this one through.

Great book to start

I have recently started looking into electronics; I'd say with my limited experience this book is a good start. It is good for beginners and throws in more advanced stuff in case this isn't your first book.
