Opened in 1980, the West Highland Way was Scotland's first Long Distance Route and remains the most popular, with more than 15,000 walkers tackling it each year. About the Author
Bob Aitken compiled and wrote the first edition of The West Highland Way in 1980. Roger Smith is an experienced writer and hillwalker with an extensive knowledge of the area covered in this book and its history. A former editor of the Great Outdoors magazine, he has written a large number of books about walking and the outdoors.

Interesting Background Reading

The best feature of this guide is the history and stories of the places along The Way. It provides a great sketch and a good place to start doing your background reading.
The path is well marked, so one seldom needs to refer to the map to find the way. Its' usefulness is knowing elevations and the names of the features and places along the way. We also took the Trailblazer guide by Charlie Loram and the map by Footprint and found them both to be quite good.
We absolutely loved Scotland and would recommend The Way to anyone who enjoys a good walk about. We went the first week of September and enjoyed fabulous weather. The devilish midgies were absent in the lower elevations and not too bad on the moors. The bracken was turning golden in the north.

This is THE book for hiking the West Highland Way, which is the penultimate hiking trail in Scotland. We can't wait for tour of the Highlands!
